The Virtue of Visiting the Neighbor

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some of my neighbors are non-Muslims, and some are Muslim women who have certain observations regarding me. What is the ruling on exchanging visits among them?

Answer:
Exchanging visits in such a case, if it is for the sake of advice, guidance, and cooperation in righteousness and piety, is good and commanded. Allah the Exalted says: :
cooperate in righteousness and pietyوَتَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى الْبرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى
[Al-Ma'idah: 2]. And because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Allah the Exalted that He said:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu Hazim ibn Dinar that Abu Idris al-Khawlani said, "I entered the Damascus mosque and there was a young man with a beautiful mouth and white teeth sitting with some people. When they disagreed about something, they referred it to him and proceeded from his statement. I inquired about him, and it was said, 'This is Muadh ibn Jabal.' The next day I went to the noon-prayer, and I found that he had preceded me to the noon prayer and I found him praying." Abu Idris continued, "I waited for him until he had finished the prayer. Then I came to him from in front of him and greeted him and said, 'By Allah! I love you for Allah!' He said, 'By Allah?' I said, 'By Allah.' He said, 'By Allah?' I said, 'By Allah.' He said, 'By Allah?' I said, 'By Allah.' " He continued, "He took me by the upper part of my cloak and pulled me to him and said, 'Rejoice! I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, "Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said, 'My love is obliged for those who love each other in Me, and those who sit with each other in Me, and those who visit each other in Me, and those who give to each other generously in Me.' " ' "وجبت محبتي للمتحابين فيّ، والمتزاورين فيّ، والمتجالسين فيّ، والمتباذلين فيّ
Muwatta Malik 51:16
Al-Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it with a sound chain. And because he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are: (1) a just ruler; (2) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (i.e. worship Allah (Alone) sincerely from his childhood), (3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque); (4) two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only; (5) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah; (6) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity). (7) a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1423
. And because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he who believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbour with kindnessمن كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فليكرم جاره
Sahih Muslim 47a
. This includes both men and women. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
O Muslim women, none of you should consider even a sheep's trotter too insignificant to give to her neighbour.يا نساء المسلمات لا تحقرن جارة لجارتها ولو فرسن شاة
Sahih Muslim 1030
It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
There is no doubt that advice and guidance toward good are greater and more beneficial than giving a sheep’s trotter, which is one of the greatest forms of honoring neighbors, whether men or women. If this visiting does not benefit and does not result in the rectification of conditions and the removal of evil, it is prescribed to leave it off due to the lack of benefit. And success is from Allah.
