Explanation of Verses: 68-69 of Surat al-Furqan
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the meaning of the statement of the Exalted: [Al-Furqan 25:68] His punishment will be multiplied on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in humiliation [al-Furqan: 68-69]? Does the verse intend that the one who commits the three major sins will abide in the Fire forever? Or does it intend only one of them?
A: This great verse contains a warning against shirk (associating partners with Allah), killing, and zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), and that the perpetrators of these crimes are threatened by the statement of the Exalted: It was said: It is a valley in Hellfire, and it was said: He intended by it a great sin, so He explained it by His statement: [Al-Furqan 25:69] This is the recompense for one who commits these three crimes or one of them: his punishment will be multiplied, and he will abide in the punishment in humiliation. These three crimes differ in rank.
The crime of shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the greatest of crimes and the greatest of sins, and its perpetrator is eternally in the Fire forever, and he will never come out of the Fire, as Allah the Exalted said in Surat al-Tawbah:[al-Tawbah:17], and He the Exalted said:[al-An'am:88], and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:: [al-Zumar:65], and Allah the Exalted said regarding them:[al-Ma'idah:37], and the verses in this meaning are numerous.
So the mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah), if he dies without repenting, will abide in the Fire, and Paradise is forbidden to him, and forgiveness is forbidden to him by the consensus of the Muslims. The Exalted said: [al-Ma'idah: 72] And the Exalted said: [al-Nisa': 48] He made forgiveness forbidden for the mushrik, whereas what is less than shirk is under the will of Allah.
Among the types of shirk (associating partners with Allah) for which its perpetrator is eternally in the Fire if he dies upon it, provided the message has reached him, are: calling upon the dead, such as prophets, awliya (close friends of Allah), and others; calling upon the angels, the jinn, idols, stones, stars, and other created things; such as some of them saying: "O my master, I am under your protection, I am under your patronage, help me, heal my sick one, help, help..." and the like. And likewise, slaughtering for them, making vows for them, and other acts of worship that must be directed to Allah alone, and it is not permissible to direct them to anyone else from all of creation; because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying::[al-Isra:23], and His the Exalted saying:[al-Bayyinah:5], and his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:: [al-Jinn:18], and Allah the Exalted said in Surat al-Fatihah:[al-Fatihah:5], and the verses in this meaning are numerous.
As for the second crime, which is killing, and the third, which is zina, these two crimes are less than shirk if the one who commits them does not consider them permissible and knows that they are forbidden, but Satan drives him to commit killing without right due to hatred and enmity or other causes, and desire and Satan drive him to zina, while he believes that killing without right is forbidden and that zina is forbidden. Then these two crimes necessitate the Fire and abiding in it for a temporary period, unless Allah forgives its perpetrator due to good deeds, or repentance before death, or the intercession of the intercessors, or the supplication of the Muslims, or other causes that Allah has made a cause for the forgiveness of sins.
And its owner may be punished according to the will and wisdom of Allah, and this is a reality for many people: they are punished for their sins, then Allah takes them out of the Fire by His mercy, either through the intercession of the intercessors, or through the specific intercession of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or through the intercession of the angels, the prophets, or the believers. Allah takes them out of the Fire through the intercession of these people after they have spent in it the punishment that Allah has decreed for them. And there remain in the Fire groups of the people of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) who are not included in the intercession of the intercessors; Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, takes them out of the Fire by His mercy without the intercession of anyone, because they died upon tawhid and faith, but they had evil deeds and sins that caused them to enter the Fire. So when they are purified from them and the period that Allah has decreed for them to remain in it has passed, He, Glorified and Exalted is He, takes them out of the Fire as a mercy from Him, and they are thrown into the River of Life from the rivers of Paradise, and they grow in it as a seed grows in the flood of the rain. When their creation is complete, Allah admits them into Paradise, as the authentic, mass-transmitted hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) confirm this.
And from this it is known that the sinner, like the murderer and the fornicator, does not remain in the Fire eternally in the same way as the disbelievers, but rather in a specific type of permanence that has an end; due to His saying:[Al-Furqan 25:69] And this is a temporary permanence, not like the permanence of the polytheists. Similarly, what has been reported regarding the warning for the one who kills himself. We ask Allah for safety from that.
And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
A: This great verse contains a warning against shirk (associating partners with Allah), killing, and zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), and that the perpetrators of these crimes are threatened by the statement of the Exalted:
And whoever does that will meet a great sin
Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated -
The crime of shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the greatest of crimes and the greatest of sins, and its perpetrator is eternally in the Fire forever, and he will never come out of the Fire, as Allah the Exalted said in Surat al-Tawbah:
It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allah [while] witnessing against themselves with disbelief. [For] those, their deeds have become worthless, and in the Fire they will abide eternally.
But if they had associated others with Allah, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.
And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers."
They will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment.
So the mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah), if he dies without repenting, will abide in the Fire, and Paradise is forbidden to him, and forgiveness is forbidden to him by the consensus of the Muslims. The Exalted said:
Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
