The Ruling on Singing and People Gathering for Musical Instruments and Songs
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on songs? Are they forbidden or not? Even though I listen to them solely for entertainment? What is the ruling on playing the rabab and old songs? And is drumming at weddings forbidden, even though I have heard that it is permissible and I do not know? May Allah reward you and guide your steps.
Answer: Listening to songs is forbidden and an abomination, and it is among the causes of the sickness of hearts, their hardness, and their being prevented from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Most of the scholars of knowledge interpreted the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Luqman 31:6] the verse [Luqman: 6] as referring to singing. And Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to swear that the idle talk is: singing.
And if the singing is accompanied by a musical instrument such as the rabab, the oud, the violin, or the drum, the prohibition becomes more severe. Some scholars mentioned that singing with a musical instrument is forbidden by consensus.
So it is obligatory to be cautious of that, and it is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 5590 And the har is: the forbidden private part—meaning fornication—and the ma'azif are the songs and musical instruments.
I advise you and others to listen to the Noble Qur'an radio and the program Nur 'ala al-Darb, for in them are great benefits, and they occupy one with something that distracts from listening to songs and musical instruments.
As for marriage, it is prescribed to strike the hand drum with the customary singing, which does not contain a call to what is forbidden or praise of what is forbidden, at any time of the night, specifically for women; to announce the marriage and to distinguish it from fornication, as the Sunnah is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this.
As for the drum, it is not permissible to strike it at the wedding; rather, one should suffice with the hand drum specifically. And it is not permissible to use loudspeakers in announcing the marriage and the customary songs said therein; because of the great fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), the dire consequences, and the harm to Muslims in that. And it is not permissible to prolong the time in that either; rather, one should suffice with the short time in which the marriage is announced; because prolonging the time leads to the loss of the Fajr prayer and sleeping through its performance in its time, and that is among the greatest of the forbidden things and among the deeds of the hypocrites.
