The Ruling on Zakah for Worn Jewelry

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: There is extravagance among some women in wearing gold, even though wearing it is lawful. What is the ruling on zakah in gold? Of course, zakah is a branch of our topic on consumption and spending.

A: Gold and silk are made lawful for women, not for men, as it is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah, and forbidden to the males.أحل الذهب والحرير لإناث أمتي وحرم على ذكورها
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148Sahih (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Nasa'i, and al-Tirmidhi, and al-Tirmidhi graded it authentic, from the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him).
The scholars differed on whether zakah is obligatory on jewelry or not.
Some scholars held that it is not obligatory on jewelry that a woman wears and lends out, while others said that it is obligatory, and this is the correct view, namely the obligation of zakah on it once it reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed over it, due to the generality of the evidence.
The nisab is twenty mithqals of gold and one hundred and forty mithqals of silver. If jewelry, such as necklaces, bracelets, or the like, reaches twenty mithqals of gold, zakah becomes obligatory on it. Twenty mithqals equal eleven and a half Saudi riyals. Its weight is 92 grams. If gold jewelry reaches this amount of 92 grams—eleven and a half riyals—then zakah is obligatory on it. The zakah is one-quarter of a tenth, which is twenty-five out of every thousand, every year.
It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that a woman came to him and her daughter had two gold bracelets on her hand, and he said:
Do you give the zakah of this?أتعطين زكاة هذا؟
She said: No. He said:
Are you pleased that Allah may put two bangles of fire on your hands?أيسرك أن يسورك الله بهما يوم القيامة سوارين من نار؟
Sunan Abi Dawud 1563Hasan (Al-Albani)
The narrator, who is Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both), said: So she took them off and threw them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: They are for Allah and His Messenger. It was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i with a sound chain.
And Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), who used to wear gold ornaments, said: Is this a treasure, O Messenger of Allah? He said, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him:
whatever reaches a quantity on which zakat is payable is not a treasure (kanz) when the zakat is paid.ما بلغ أن تؤدي زكاته فزكي فليس بكنز
Sunan Abi Dawud 1564
It was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Daraqutni, and al-Hakim graded it authentic.
Abu Dawud narrated from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) with a sound chain that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and I had silver rings on my hand, and he said:
What is this, Aishah?ما هذا يا عائشة؟
Sunan Abi Dawud 1565Sahih (Al-Albani)
I said: I made them to adorn myself for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said:
Do you pay its zakah?أتؤدينن زكاتهن؟
I said: No, or what Allah wills. He said:
this is sufficient for you (to take you) to the Hell fireهو حسبك من النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 1565Sahih (Al-Albani)
Al-Hakim graded it authentic, as al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab mentioned in *Bulugh al-Maram*. The term "warraq" (silver) refers to silver.
This indicates that what is not subject to zakah is a treasure for which its owner will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, may Allah protect us from that.
We ask Allah for all of you for success, assistance, guidance, and rectification of deeds. We also ask Him, the Exalted, to guide us, you, and all Muslims to what is in the interest of Islam, and to cause us all to die upon it. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near. And may Allah send prayers and peace upon Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
