The ruling on one who shortens his garment and lengthens his trousers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people shorten their garments to above the ankles, but their trousers remain long. What is the ruling on that?

A: Isbal (letting a garment hang below the ankles) is forbidden and an abomination, whether it is in the shirt, the lower garment, the trousers, or the cloak. It is what extends beyond the ankles, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
narrated by al-Bukhari. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: There are three to whom Allah will not speak and at whom He will not look on the Day of Resurrection, and whom He will not declare pure, and they will have a painful punishment. I asked: Who are they, Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He repeated it three times. I asked: Who are they. Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He replied: The one who wears a trailing robe, the one who takes account of what he gives, and the one who produces a ready sale of a commodity by false swearing.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4087Sahih (Al-Albani)
reported by Muslim in his Sahih. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to some of his Companions:
Beware of letting the garment hang, for it is of arrogance
. These hadiths indicate that isbal is among the major sins, even if the one who does it claims he did not intend arrogance, due to their generality and absolute wording. As for one who intends arrogance by it, his sin is greater and his transgression is more severe. Based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever arrogantly drags his garment, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgement.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731Sahih (Darussalam)
And because by doing so, he combines isbal and arrogance. We ask Allah for safety from that.
As for the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Abu Bakr when he said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, my lower garment hangs loose unless I attend to it," and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "You are not one who does it out of arrogance"
You are not one of those who do so conceitedly.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4085Sahih (Al-Albani)
, this hadith does not indicate that isbal is permissible for one who does not intend arrogance. Rather, it indicates that if one's lower garment or trousers hang loose without the intention of arrogance, and he attends to it and fixes it, then there is no sin on him.
As for what some people do of letting their trousers hang below the ankles, this is not permissible. The Sunnah is that the shirt and the like should be between the middle of the calf and the ankle, acting in accordance with all the hadiths. And success is from Allah.
