The questioner : What is the ruling on isbal, which has become widespread among many people? What is its criterion? And is it restricted to arrogance?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the Pious, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. Isbal is when the garment, trousers, or outer robe hangs below the ankles in the case of men. It is forbidden, indeed it is among the major sins, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as narrated by Muslim from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him):
There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection nor will He look at them or purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment. ثلاثةٌ لا يكلّمهم الله يوم القيامة، ولا ينظر إليهم، ولا يزكيهم، ولهم عذابٌ أليم
Sunan Ibn Majah 2208Sahih (Darussalam)
They said: "They have failed and lost. Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He said:
the dragger of lower garment, the recounter of obligation the seller of goods by false oath. المسبل، والمنان، والمنفق سلعته بالحلف الكاذب
Sahih Muslim 106a
The one who lets his garment hang below the ankles, whether it is trousers, an izar, a shirt, or an outer robe, and the one who boasts of what he has done of good for others, so you find him boasting over them and reminding them of the good he did for them, or if he invites them he says, "By Allah, I am busy, but you are dear to me," and the like of what he boasts about to others. Al-Munan is a form of exaggeration that implies he frequently boasts about the good he does.
As for the one who sells his goods with false oaths, he is the one who swears in his buying and selling in order to increase the price, and he is lying by saying, "By Allah, I bought it for one hundred," when he bought it for eighty, or he describes it with a quality it does not have, which increases the price. The point of this hadith is his saying:
The one who lets his garment hang المسبل
The apparent meaning of the hadith is absolute, whether he lets his garment hang for arrogance or not. We have limited it to the ankles based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
But whatever is lower than the ankle is in the Fire ما أسفل من الكعبين ففي النار
Sunan Ibn Majah 3573Sahih (Darussalam)
As for what is above the ankles, it does not harm.
It may be said that what hangs below the ankles is divided into two categories. The first is that he drags his garment in arrogance; this is the one for whom there is the severe warning that Allah will not look at him, will not purify him, and for him is a painful punishment. On this basis, the hadith of Abu Dharr is restricted by the hadith that indicates the intended meaning is that the one who did that did so out of arrogance.
As for the one whose garment hangs below his ankles without arrogance, his punishment is less than that, and it is that he will be punished in the Fire according to how much his garment hung below his ankles. This is a partial punishment. Do not be surprised that the punishment is partial, for it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said when some of the Companions were washing their feet below their heels, he called out at the top of his voice:
Woe to the heels because of Hell-fire. ويلٌ للأعقاب من النار
Sunan Ibn Majah 453Sahih (Darussalam)
.
In summary, the answer is: if one lets his garment hang out of arrogance, then for him is this warning in the hadith of Abu Dharr: that Allah will not speak to him on the Day of Resurrection, will not look at him, will not purify him, and for him is a painful punishment. And if it is not out of arrogance, then he is warned of the Fire, but it is a partial warning only for the extent of the transgression.

The questioner : May Allah preserve you. His second question says.
