Ruling on not responding to an invitation if it involves hardship

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
If the invitation to attend a wedding reception requires the invitee to spend large sums of money on her clothing and adornment, is it better to accept the invitation despite those costs, or should I stay in my home until another time and then come just to offer congratulations? The costs reach astronomical amounts. In fact, I mentioned this to Your Eminence, the Shaykh. I ask that you please address this?
Answer: The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded responding to the invitation, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Muslim has six rights over the Muslim, among which is: that he should respond to him when he invites himللمسلم على المسلم ست خصال منها: أن يجيبه إذا دعاه
, and he said:
he who did not accept the invitation disobeyed Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).من لم يجب الدعوة فقد عصى الله ورسوله
Sahih Muslim 1432d
. So responding to the invitation for a wedding feast or any other lawful feast is a prescribed matter. If responding to the invitation imposes a burden on the invitee that is difficult for him, then this is a valid legal excuse. For example, if the distance is long and requires a car and its associated cost, or if it requires clothing that he cannot afford and which is difficult for him, or other things that are difficult for people according to custom, then this is a valid legal excuse. However, if it does not impose a difficult burden, and he has clothing that he wears as usual, then this is not an excuse. The woman wears the clothing, or the man wears the clothing, and goes as he usually does, just as he wears clothing on Friday and on the day of Eid. He wears the appropriate clothing for this feast, and she also wears it, and she responds to the invitation if the place of the invitation does not contain any evil. But if the place of the invitation contains evil, such as the presence of forbidden songs, forbidden cinema, or other things that are considered evil, such as musical instruments and playing the oud and the like, which are forbidden in the Shari'ah, or the mixing of men and women, then all of this prevents responding to the invitation. As for the ordinary things, such as playing the hand drum and the customary songs in a marriage between women only, then there is nothing wrong with that and no blame on her.
The intended point and the criterion: If there is evil that does not cease by her presence or his presence, then it is a valid legal excuse for not attending. But if this evil ceases by the presence of the invitee or her presence, because she condemns it, or because they fear his or her presence and they abandon the evil, then it is obligatory to attend at that time to remove the evil, along with responding to the invitation. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. If our sister sees that these clothes and this adornment reach the limit of extravagance?
The Shaykh: Do not be extravagant for their sake. Extravagance is not permissible. It is exceeding the required and appropriate need. And wastefulness is spending money in a way other than its proper purpose. And extravagance is exceeding. If there is actual extravagance that is not fitting, then it is not permissible for her, and she should not do it for the sake of this invitation. Rather, she should wear her customary jewelry or her customary clothing, like that of her peers.
The presenter: Like her peers?
The Shaykh: Yes.
The presenter: All right.
