The ruling on one whom the doctor has prevented from fasting Ramadan due to his illness
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From the Eastern Province, Ras Tanura, a message sent by our brother Mushabbib al-Qahtani. Our brother says: I am a young man of twenty-five years old. Allah decreed that I was afflicted with a disease in one of my kidneys, and I was hospitalized for six months. After leaving the hospital, I traveled to India and had a surgery there which was successful, praise be to Allah. Now, praise be to Allah, I am enjoying an improvement toward a full recovery, and I am still in the treatment period. I asked the specialist doctor about fasting in the month of Ramadan, and he advised me against fasting, stating that fasting would be harmful to me, as he says. I also asked the same question of a Muslim doctor and found the same answer. Now I ask Your Eminence, the Shaykh, how should I act? And if expiation is required by money or feeding, how is it to be paid out? Is it to be paid in one lump sum, or for each day? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer: There is no blame on you for leaving the fasting, based on what the two doctors mentioned to you, until Allah heals you. If the doctors permit you to fast, praise be to Allah. Otherwise, it is obligatory for you to expiate for each day by feeding a poor person, half a sa' of dates, rice, or wheat, or other staple food of the country. There is no blame in collecting it and giving it to one person at the end of the month, or to two or more, or in giving it out every day; the matter is broad. Whether you collect it and give it to some of the poor, or give it out every day, or after the festival, there is no blame in any of that, praise be to Allah. This is the practice every year until the doctors permit you to fast. Perhaps the danger will be removed if some years pass and the safety of the kidney is established, and perhaps they will permit you to fast. If they permit you, praise be to Allah. Otherwise, continue with the feeding. Yes.
