How to Deal with Obsessive Thoughts
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He also asks and says: I am a man who is often overcome by obsessive thoughts. When I want to go down a certain path, this obsession opposes me, suggesting that the path is in another direction. And when I want to eat food, Satan whispers to me that the food is not wholesome and that it is harmful, even though I am afraid of making a vow, because I suspect that I might vow upon myself. I ask for your guidance. May Allah guide you.
Answer: Obsessive thoughts are from Satan, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Al-Nas:1-4]. It is Satan. So, my brother, you must seek refuge in Allah from him, beware of his schemes, and be decisive in matters. If you take a path, be decisive and proceed in it until you know for certain that there is something in it that harms you, then leave it. Likewise, with food, if you do not know that it is forbidden, eat it and leave the obsessive thoughts alone.
Likewise, with ablution, if you perform it, be decisive and do not let yourself be obsessed into saying, "I did not complete it" or "I did not do it." Proceed, as long as you see that you have completed it, praise be to Allah. And so in your prayer, beware of obsessive thoughts in everything, and know that they are from Satan. If any of that occurs in your heart, seek refuge in Allah from Satan and proceed on your way, being decisive about it, until you frustrate your enemy, Satan, and until he is unable to dominate you because of your leniency with him. We seek refuge in Allah from his evil and his schemes. Yes.
