The question: And the first letter of this episode came from the sender (N. M.) from Iraq, Tarmiyah Governorate. She says in her letter: After a great anger came upon me without me losing my consciousness, I swore by Allah three times: "By Allah, by Allah, by Allah," and by the Qur'an, that I would not marry for the rest of my life. And since there is no monasticism in Islam, what must I do? And what is the expiation I must perform for my oath? Guide us, may Allah reward you.
The answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and the outcome is for the righteous, and may Allah send prayers and blessings and bestow favor upon His servant and messenger, our Prophet and our Imam Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his path and is guided by his guidance until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: This oath is wrong and it is not permissible to carry it out, for the believer does not refrain from marriage, but rather he strives for it; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Mishkat al-Masabih 3080, and this includes both men and women. So you must pay the expiation for an oath, which is feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. Whoever is unable to do that must fast for three days, even if the oath was repeated, or if you repeated the oath many times, by Allah or by one of His attributes or by the Qur'an; because the Qur'an is the speech of Allah. This oath, even if repeated many times, even over many days or even over years, its ruling is the ruling of a single oath. So you must pay its expiation, which, as mentioned, is feeding ten poor people from the needy, each poor person receiving half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of dates or rice or other staple food of the country, the amount being approximately one and a half kilograms, to be given to ten people; or clothing for each one, such as an undergarment and an outer garment, or a shirt; or freeing a believing slave, male or female. Whoever is unable to do that, such as a poor person who cannot afford feeding, clothing, or freeing a slave, it is sufficient for him to fast for three days. And praise be to Allah. Yes.
