Ruling on shaving a beard that has only a few hairs
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A message was received from our brother Adam Ahmad from the village of al-Mathaba in Sudan. In his message, which contains two questions, he says: If I have some hairs in my beard that do not exceed ten, and they are ugly in appearance, meaning not acceptable, is it permissible for me to shave them? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: This was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Muslim also narrated in his Sahih from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 260 This is how he (peace and blessings be upon him) speaks, and this is how he commands. He did not exclude a few hairs or thick hairs, but he stated it generally. He said: This encompasses both the few and the many.
Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to trim it or shave it, even if it is few, and even if he claims that it disfigures him. Indeed, whenever he fears Allah, Allah will make his affairs easy, straighten his beard, guide him to good, and remove from him what he fears of what he dislikes.
So it is obligatory for the believer to fear Allah in this matter, and to take care of it by honoring it, preserving it, and utilizing the means that increase it. There may be things with doctors that help improve this hair and its abundance, so let him utilize what helps him in that.
As for trimming it or shaving it, no. The Sunnah is clear in this matter. So it is not permissible for a believer to trim the beard, even if it is few, and it is not permissible for him to shave it. Rather, it is obligatory for him to preserve it, honor it, let it grow, and let it hang down in obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and in opposition to the enemies of Allah, namely the polytheists and the Zoroastrians.
Even if they let it hang down at some times, or even if we suppose that they let it hang down entirely, we remain in our state, letting it hang down. And if they agree with us, it does no harm. If only they would agree with us even in Islam. If only they would submit to Islam, and we would praise Allah for that.
The point is that some ignorant people may think that whenever they let it hang down, we should shave. This is a great error. No, if they let it hang down, praise be to Allah. We ask Allah to guide them so that they enter Islam. If they agree with us in matters of Islam, we do not oppose Islam for their sake. No; but we do not do what agrees with them and matches their dress, thereby opposing our religion. Yes.
Answer: It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Trim your mustaches and let your beards grow, and oppose the polytheists
قصوا الشوارب واعفوا اللحى، خالفوا المشركينTrim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.
جزوا الشوارب وأرخوا اللحى، خالفوا المجوسAnd let the beards grow
واعفوا اللحىand let your beards grow
وأرخوا اللحىTherefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to trim it or shave it, even if it is few, and even if he claims that it disfigures him.
