The Boundaries of the Beard and the Ruling on Shaving and Trimming It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible to shave the sideburns? What is the ruling on trimming the beard? And is the ruling on trimming it the same as the ruling on shaving it?

Answer:
The beard is an honor from Allah for the man; Allah made it an honor for the man, and He made it a distinguishing feature for him from women, and a distinguishing feature for him from the disbelievers who shave their beards. It is the adornment of men, it is light on the face, and it is a distinguishing feature for them from women. Therefore, it is not permissible for him to subject it to shaving or trimming; he must not shave it or trim it, and he must not shave the sideburns along with the cheeks. This is because the beard is the name for the hair that grows on the cheeks and the chin. The cheeks and the chin are the beard, the hair of the beard, and the chin which is below the lower lip. This is the beard. It is not permissible for him to trim it or shave it; rather, it is obligatory to honor it, let it grow, and preserve it. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to let the beards grow and trim the mustaches, and he said:
Differ from the polytheists, trim the mustaches, and let the beards grow.خالفوا المشركين، قصوا الشوارب وأعفوا اللحى
And he said, (peace and blessings be upon him):
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.جزوا الشوارب، وأرخوا اللحى، خالفوا المجوس
Sahih Muslim 260
And in another wording:
Let the beards grow.وفروا اللحى
And let the beards growوأوفى اللحى
.
Therefore, the Muslim must preserve it, let it hang down, and it is forbidden for him to trim or shave it. This is the obligation upon the Muslim. The believer is not pleased to resemble his sister, his daughter, his aunt, or his mother. Rather, he should let it hang down and preserve it so that he remains with the mark of men and the faces of men, and so that he distances himself from resembling the Zoroastrians and the polytheists who shave them and lengthen the tufts, which are the mustaches. The mustache is trimmed and shaved, and the beard is preserved and let hang down. This is what is prescribed, this is what is obligatory, and Allah is the One to be sought for help.

Question: They say: Do the polytheists, the disbelievers now, let their beards hang down?

Answer: If they preserve them, praise be to Allah. Perhaps Allah will guide them so that they become Muslims. If they agree with us in good, we do not agree with them in evil. If they agree with us by letting their beards hang down, becoming Muslims, and entering the religion of Allah, that is good. But if they preserve them while we shave, and if they pray while we do not pray, and if they pay zakah while we do not pay zakah, this is speech... And if they oppose us, we are upon our religion, and they are upon their religion
For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ
[Al-Kafirun: 6].
