The Ruling on Zihar and Its Expiation

The listener whose name is indicated by the initials (A. M. R) from Taif-Raniyyah says in his question: I said on one occasion: “My wife is forbidden to me like my mother and my sister if she does this.” What is your opinion on this problem? Please advise us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: If a man says that his wife is forbidden to him like the prohibition of his mother or his sister if she does such and such, this is called zihar. He must pay the expiation for zihar and repent to Allah, because zihar is an evil statement and a lie, and there is no action for it. However, when he says that his wife is forbidden to him like his mother, or his sister, or his grandmother, or his aunt, or his maternal aunt, or the like, if she speaks to so-and-so, or if she does not sleep with me, or if she does such and such, this is called zihar.
So he must repent to Allah for that. And if she does what he forbade her from doing, then the expiation for zihar becomes obligatory upon him. The expiation is freeing a believing male or female slave. If he cannot do that, he must fast for two consecutive months. If he is unable to do that, he must feed sixty poor people, which is thirty sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg). The sa' is four full handfuls with two medium-sized hands. This is the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So he must give thirty sa' by the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), distributed among sixty poor people, with each poor person receiving half a sa', which is approximately one and a half kilograms by weight. This is before he touches her or has any contact with her, as expiation for the prohibition and zihar that occurred from him. And Allah is the Helper. Yes.
