The Ruling on Eating the Meat of Domestic Donkeys, Frogs, and Horses

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question: Is the meat of donkeys, frogs, and horses lawful or forbidden? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: As for donkeys and frogs, they are forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
He addressed the people and informed them that domestic donkeys are forbidden, saying: They are an impurity.خطب الناس وأخبرهم أن الحمر الأهلية حرام، قال: إنها رجس
and the scholars agreed on their prohibition. These are the known domestic donkeys. As for wild donkeys... ... these are permissible; it is known that they are a different form... . As for the donkeys among us... ... that we ride or carry loads on, these are called domestic donkeys, and they are also called human-associated donkeys. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them, and he addressed the people regarding this on multiple occasions to clarify to them... ... that they are an impurity, and the Muslims agreed on their prohibition.
Likewise, frogs were forbidden to be killed, and when killing them was forbidden, it indicated their prohibition.
As for the horse, there is no harm in it; horses were made lawful for us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
prohibited eating of the flesh of domestic asses on the Day of Khaibar, and permitted the cooking of the flesh of horses.نهى عن لحوم الحمر الأهلية وأذن في لحوم الخيل
Sahih Muslim 1941a
.
Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
We slaughtered a horse in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while we were in Madinah, and we ate it.نحرنا على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فرسًا ونحن بالمدينة فأكلناه
This indicates that there is no harm in horses. However, some scholars dislike eating them if there is a need for them during jihad. If there is no need and the Muslims are in a state of abundance regarding them, then there is no harm in slaughtering and eating them. However, if the need for them arises in jihad, it is better to leave them for jihad and not slaughter them, so that the Muslims can make use of them in fighting their enemies. Yes.
