Clarification of those from whom a woman must observe hijab
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The following message was received from the listener (M. R. Abdul-Rabb) from the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, Aden. The message contains several questions. The first question asks: How should a woman observe hijab, and from whom? Does it cover her entire body? Is it obligatory for her to show her hands and face to all mahrams? Please clarify this. May Allah reward you.
Answer: A woman observes hijab from those who are not her mahrams, such as her neighbors, her paternal cousins, and her husband's brother. As for her mahrams, she does not observe hijab from them. There is no harm in her face, hands, and feet being visible to her mahrams, such as her brother, her paternal uncle, and her maternal uncle. There is no harm in that. The hijab is required from non-mahrams, such as her paternal cousin, who is a non-mahram, and her sister's husband, her husband's brother, her husband's paternal uncle, and the like. She must observe hijab from them and cover her face and her entire body. This is based on the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [Al-Ahzab: 53]. And Allah, the Exalted, said in Surat al-Nur: [Al-Nur: 31] to the end of the verse. Thus, she is commanded to observe hijab from those who are not her mahrams. Yes.

And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.
وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَاعًا فَاسْأَلُوهُنَّ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ ذَلِكُمْ أَطْهَرُ لِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَقُلُوبِهِنَّexcept to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers
وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ
