Ruling on Family Planning for a Period of Five Years
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is his second question, and it is also related to the first question. He says: What is the ruling on family planning, for example, every five years? And what is my obligation as a husband if I advise my wife against it, but she refuses to become pregnant at all after our child who is now four years old, on the grounds that she is spared the hardship of pregnancy and childbirth, and she fears circumstances that may happen to me, to her, or to us both, leaving the children alone? This is what she always mentions when I advise her and warn her of the command of Allah and that she must submit to His decree. In the end, she says to me: either work and do not have children, or divorce me. What is my religious obligation regarding her insistence on this?
Answer: It is obligatory for you both to cooperate in righteousness and piety, and you should advise her frequently not to prevent pregnancy for the duration mentioned. This is because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged procreation and encouraged increasing the number of the Ummah. He said (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:869. She should submit to this command, have good opinion of her Lord, and strive to raise them with Islamic upbringing, and you should cooperate in this. As for delaying pregnancy for five years or more, this is not permissible, and the most apparent from the evidence is that it is prohibited. However, if it is one or two years for the sake of upbringing, meaning the duration of breastfeeding, there is no harm, if Allah wills, in the one or two years which is the duration of breastfeeding or less, due to the need to raise the children and so that they do not become too many for her to handle, causing her to be unable to raise them, in which case there is no harm. So you must strive to convince her, consult with her, and advise her, perhaps Allah will guide her so that she returns to the right path. As for divorce, you should not hasten to divorce her, but try to make her convinced of this matter. Yes.
The presenter: Is it permissible for her, O Shaykh, to say: either work and do not have children, or divorce her?
The Shaykh: It is not permissible for her to do that. She has no right to demand divorce without a valid cause, and this is not a valid cause for demanding divorce. Rather, he is advising her, and his words are more correct, while her action is not good. She should, and it is obligatory upon her, to listen to her husband and obey her husband, and to enable him to the means of increasing procreation by refraining from using what prevents pregnancy.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
