The ruling on one who says to his wife: “You are forbidden to me, like my mother”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Finally, the Egyptian brother from Abu Hamad Center says: A disagreement occurred between me and my wife’s family, so I said to my wife: “If you go to your father’s house, you will be forbidden to me, like my mother and my sister.” So, if she goes to her father’s house after that, what should I do? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: This is called zihar. If you did this, it constitutes zihar, and you owe the expiation for zihar, which is freeing a believing slave. If you cannot do that, you must fast for two consecutive months. If you are unable to do that, you must feed sixty poor people.
It is obligatory for you to refrain from doing that; because this is an abhorrent statement, so it is not permissible for him to do that. Rather, he should fear Allah and strive to avoid these things. But if he did it, he must repent and seek forgiveness, and he must perform the expiation before he touches her:
