The Nisab of Wealth

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He has a third question in which he asks: How many coins are subject to zakah? And how much time must pass for that?
Answer: The nisab of gold is twenty mithqals, and its amount in Saudi riyals is eleven and three-sevenths of a riyal, meaning: close to half, eleven and a half riyals. When this amount is reached, zakah becomes obligatory upon it whenever the lunar year has passed, one-fourth of a tenth in every forty riyals, which is one riyal, or its value in silver or paper currency. Its amount in grams is ninety-two grams; this is the nisab. The obligatory amount is one-fourth of a tenth, whether the amount is small or large, provided the nisab is reached and the lunar year has passed. So in forty riyals, it is one riyal; in one hundred, it is two and a half; and so on. If he gives out gold, that is better. If he gives out its value in silver or in paper currency in use, there is no harm in that, and that suffices.
As for silver, its nisab is one hundred and forty mithqals, and its amount in Saudi riyals is fifty-six riyals. If a person has fifty-six or more, and the lunar year has passed over it, zakah becomes obligatory upon it, one-fourth of a tenth. In every one hundred, it is two and a half; in one thousand, it is twenty-five; and so on. In ten thousand, it is two hundred and fifty; in one hundred thousand, it is two thousand and five hundred; and so on.
It is obligatory upon the Muslim to fear Allah and to give zakah with a willing heart and sincerity, and to pay it to those who are entitled to it, such as the poor, the needy, those in debt, and travelers, and the like of them from the people of zakah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you. You mentioned, Your Eminence the Shaykh, that the nisab of silver is equivalent to fifty-six Saudi riyals. Does this refer to silver riyals?
The Shaykh: Silver and whatever takes its place.
The presenter: Does paper currency take its place?
The Shaykh: Yes.
The presenter: Meaning by its value...
The Shaykh: Because it is its currency; because it is a stable currency in place of gold and silver. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
