The Ruling on Reciting Dhikr with a Misbaha (Prayer Beads)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return at the beginning of this episode to a message we received from Sudan, specifically from Khartoum, sent by a listener there who indicated his name with the letters (K. A. S. B). We have presented a collection of his questions, and he has some remaining questions in this episode. In one of them, he says:
I recite dhikr with a misbaha (prayer beads) at times other than prayer. This is not because I believe it has a virtue over using the hand, but rather because it attracts me and makes me remember Allah frequently. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
`Umarah bin Shabib As-Saba’i narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever says: none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the praise, He gives life and causes death, and He is powerful over all things, (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, yuḥyī wa yumītu, wa huwa `alā kulli shai’in qadīr)’ ten times at the end of Al-Maghrib - Allah shall send for him protectors to guard him from Shaitan until he reaches morning, and Allah writes for him ten good deeds, Mujibat, and He wipes from him ten of the destructive evil deeds, and it shall be for him the equal of freeing ten believing slaves.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3534Hasan (Darussalam)
So I am unable to count that except with the misbaha. Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
Reciting tasbih with the fingers is better. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to count tasbih, tahmid, and takbir with his fingers, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He used to command that these adhkar be counted with the fingertips, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. This is what is best for the believing man and woman: to count the adhkar with the fingers. If he counts them with seeds... or with stones, or with something else, or with a misbaha, there is no harm. It has been narrated from many of the Salaf that they used to count with seeds and other things of the types used for counting. So there is no blame in that, but the best is to count with the fingers. If he does this in his home with seeds or a misbaha or something else, there is no harm in that. However, in the mosques and among people, it is better for him, and more confirmed in his right, to count with the fingers, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did , and because this misbaha with him in the mosques and elsewhere may lead to showing off (riya').
He should therefore leave that practice, and the misbaha and other things used for counting should be kept in the house to help him with the remembrance of Allah; there is no harm in that. However, counting on the fingers is better, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions and their satisfaction. Yes.
And I advise my brothers to take care of dhikr in the morning and evening, for the matter is great and the benefit is large. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
Whoever says: "La ilaha illal-lah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu-l-mulk wa lahul- hamd wa huwa 'ala kulli shai'in qadir," one hundred times will get the same reward as given for manumitting ten slaves; and one hundred good deeds will be written in his accounts, and one hundred sins will be deducted from his accounts, and it (his saying) will be a shield for him from Satan on that day till night, and nobody will be able to do a better deed except the one who does more than he.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6403
.
This is a great virtue. So I advise every believing man and every believing woman to come to this dhikr every day. If it is in the early morning, it is better, so that he obtains this great good throughout the day. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is no god but Allah, the One, having no partner with Him, His is the Sovereignty and all praise is due to Him and He is Potent over everythingمن قال: لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير
Sahih Muslim 2693
It came in another narration:
He gives life and He causes death, in His hand is good, and He is over all things capable. One hundred times, it will be for him the equivalent of freeing ten slaves, and Allah will write for him one hundred good deeds, and erase from him one hundred bad deeds, and he will be in protection from Satan on that day until he becomes evening, and no one will come with better than what he came with except a man who did more work than his work.
It is agreed upon its authenticity.
And he said:
Whoever says, 'Glory be to Allah and with His praise' (Subhana'llah wa bi-hamdihi) one hundred times in a day will have his wrong actions taken away from him, even if they are as abundant as the foam on the sea.
Muwatta Malik 15:23
It is agreed upon.
And in a narration by Muslim:
He who recites in the morning and in the evening (these words):" Exalted is Allah (He is free from imperfection)and all praise is due to Him" one hundred timesمن قال حين يصبح وحين يمسي: سبحان الله وبحمده مائة مرة
Sahih Muslim 2692
And in a narration by Abu Dawud with a sound chain:
'Glory be to Allah and with His praise' (Subhana'llah wa bi-hamdihi) one hundred times in a day will have his wrong actions taken away from him, even if they are as abundant as the foam on the sea.
Muwatta Malik 15:23
.
This is a great virtue. The believer should strive for this: Subhan Allah al-Azim wa bihamdihi (Glory be to Allah the Great and by His praise) one hundred times in the morning and evening. He should say: La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-hamd wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir (There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable) one hundred times. In the day, in the beginning of the day, in the middle of it, all is good. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
He who utters ten times: 'La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahulmulku wa lahulhamdu, wa Huwa 'ala kulli sha'in Qadir (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him. His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),' he will have a reward equal to that for freeing four slaves from the progeny of Prophet Isma'il.
Riyad as-Salihin 1411
It is agreed upon its authenticity.
This is a great virtue. The believer should increase in these great adhkar because of the benefit in them. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two words which are light on the tongue and heavy in the Balance, and beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhan-Allah wa bi hamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-'Azim (Glory and praise is to Allah, glory is to Allah the Almighty).
Sunan Ibn Majah 3806Sahih (Darussalam)
It is agreed upon its authenticity.
So these two phrases have a great status; they have a great status: Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi (Glory be to Allah and by His praise), Subhan Allah al-Azim (Glory be to Allah the Great). One should increase in them in your night and your day, on the road, and at all times: Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi, Subhan Allah al-Azim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding them:
Two words which are light on the tongue and heavy in the Balance, and beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhan-Allah wa bi hamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-'Azim (Glory and praise is to Allah, glory is to Allah the Almighty).
Sunan Ibn Majah 3806Sahih (Darussalam)
.
And one day he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon one of his wives, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, and she was in her place of worship after the Fajr prayer. He entered upon her in the Duha time and said:
Are you still in the same position as I left you." I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon the Prophet said, "I recited four words three times after I had left you. If these are to be weighed against all you have recited since morning, these will be heavier.
Riyad as-Salihin 1433
.
These four phrases are repeated by the person three times.
The presenter: Your Eminence, you are generous in repeating them.
The Shaykh: Subhan Allah al-Azim wa bihamdihi (Glory be to Allah the Great and by His praise) the number of His creation, Subhan Allah rida nafsihi (Glory be to Allah the pleasure of His self), Subhan Allah zinata 'Arshihi (Glory be to Allah the weight of His Throne), Subhan Allah mada' kalamatihi (Glory be to Allah the ink of His words). The person repeats them three times in the night, in the day, on the road, at any time. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to one of his wives:
I recited four words three times after I left you and if these are to be weighed against what you have recited since morning these would outweigh themلقد قلت بعدك أربع كلمات ثلاث مرات لو وزنت بما قلت منذ اليوم يعني: من الصباح إلى ارتفاع الضحى لوزنتهن
Sahih Muslim 2726a
.
Subhan Allah al-Azim wa bihamdihi the number of His creation - this is one - Subhan Allah rida nafsihi - two - Subhan Allah zinata 'Arshihi - three - Subhan Allah mada' kalamatihi - four, this is the fourth.
The believing man and woman should repeat this and come to this
Sunan Ibn Majah 3808Sahih (Darussalam)
, a great virtue and much good. We ask Allah for success for everyone. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good and accept from you.
