The Ruling on Reciting the Qur'an and Prostrating in Recitation for One Who Is Lying Down
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our brother asks: Is it permissible for a person to recite the Qur'an while lying on the bed? And how do you advise him if he comes upon a verse of prostration?
Answer: Yes, one may recite the Qur'an while standing, sitting, or lying down; there is nothing wrong with reciting it. This is based on His saying, Exalted and Majestic is He: [Al Imran: 191], and His saying, the Exalted: [An Nisa: 103]. This is among the blessings of Allah and His making things easy . The Qur'an is among the greatest forms of dhikr (remembrance of Allah). If one recites it while lying down, there is no blame on him; if he is sitting, there is no blame on him. If a verse of prostration passes him, he stands and prostrates, or he sits and prostrates if he wishes, because prostration is not obligatory; it is a recommended practice (sunnah). So if he recites while sitting, he prostrates; if he is standing, he prostrates; and if he is lying down, he sits and prostrates. He does not prostrate while lying down; he sits and prostrates. Yes.
