The Ruling on the Sacrifice for a Newborn and the Specification of Its Time

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the ruling on the sacrifice for a newborn, and what is its time? If the time for the sacrifice is missed, when should one sacrifice for the newborn? And if the newborn grows up and becomes an adult without a sacrifice being performed for him, should he sacrifice for himself while he is an adult?
Answer: The sacrifice for a newborn is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah). It consists of two animals for a boy and one animal for a girl, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded:
For a boy, two sheep, and or a girl, one sheepأن يعق عن الغلام شاتان وعن الجارية شاة
Sunan an-Nasa'i 4218Hasan (Darussalam)
Its time is the seventh day; this is the most preferred. It is on the seventh day, and if it is slaughtered after that, there is no harm, even if it is after one or two years. If his father did not sacrifice for him and he wishes to sacrifice for himself, that is good. It is prescribed for the father, but if he sacrifices for himself, or if his mother or his brother sacrifices for him, there is nothing wrong with it. It is all good, if Allah wills. It does not have a limited time, even if it is after one or two years, or if he is an adult. However, the recommended practice (sunnah) is for the father to sacrifice for his son on the seventh day; this is the recommended practice (sunnah).
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good and reward you.
