The ruling on a woman wearing black clothing

Question:
A letter reached the program from Libya, sent by a listener from there, identified as (Sh. Q. 'A), who asks several questions. In one of his questions, he says:
There is an old custom in our region where all women wear black clothing. Is this recommended or disliked?
Answer:
Women have the choice in their clothing, whether it is black, green, red, or otherwise. The matter of clothing is broad.
However, if they adhere to this out of the belief that it is an act of devotion, then it is a religious innovation. But if they consider black suitable for them because it provides more concealment from men, there is nothing wrong with that. Or for other reasons, such as it being cheaper, or other reasons, as long as it is not out of the belief that it is an act of devotion and obedience, there is no blame on them.
As for the belief that black has a special merit, is an act of devotion, or is obedience to Allah, this is a religious innovation and is not permissible.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. What if there is a group of Sufis who wear this clothing?
The Shaykh: If the intention is to imitate them, that is also not permissible. Imitating the people of innovation, or the disbelievers, is not permissible. If the intention behind wearing black is to imitate a group of Sufis, or a group of disbelievers, it is not permissible; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani).
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
