The Ruling on Relaying the Imam’s Recitation
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The first message in this episode is from one of our brother listeners. He says: Ali al-Sadiq Ali. Our brother has one question in his message, which is: What is the ruling on relaying the imam’s recitation? Is it obligatory in every prayer? Or is it only done when the imam cannot be heard by all those he is leading? And please state the number of times the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) relayed his recitation during his lifetime?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
Relaying the imam’s recitation is prescribed when there is a need for it, so that the followers can follow the imam. However, if there is no need for it because the imam can be heard by them, then there is no need for relaying.
Likewise, when Allah made loudspeakers available, people no longer needed to relay the imam’s recitation because of the loudspeakers, unless the mosque is large and has many corners where it is feared that the imam will not be heard. In that case, there is no harm in relaying, as is done in al-Masjid al-Haram and al-Masjid al-Nabawi, because the imam’s voice may be inaudible in some directions.
The conclusion is: Relaying the imam’s recitation is prescribed when there is a need for it, and when the need ceases, it is not prescribed, whether the need ceases due to the presence of a loudspeaker, or because the congregation is small and can hear, so there is no need for relaying.
It is established that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed sitting during his final illness, and Abu Bakr prayed standing to his right, and the people prayed standing behind them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the one leading the people in prayer, and Abu Bakr was relaying for him, because his voice was inaudible to them due to the illness. So Abu Bakr would relay for him. This is the preserved incident in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had his recitation relayed, as far as we know. The ruling applies to every incident after that: whenever the need arises, relaying is prescribed, and whenever the need ceases, relaying is not prescribed. Yes.
