What are the rawatib and nafilah prayers in the day and night?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Her final question says: Is there a prayer for every day and night, meaning: voluntary prayers? And did the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) pray them? This question is actually repeated often by some listeners, especially in Iraq and the Arab Republic of Egypt, and we hope to clarify that for them, may Allah guide you.

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain twelve rak'ahs in his day and night - (peace and blessings be upon him) -; he maintained them along with the prayers, twelve rak'ahs: four before the midday prayer, and two after it, and two before the dawn prayer, and two after the sunset prayer, and two after the night prayer. These are twelve rak'ahs. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain them - (peace and blessings be upon him) - in his day and night. It is authentic from him - (peace and blessings be upon him) - that he said:
Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs in his day and night as voluntary prayer, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.
Then he specified them, saying:
Four before the midday, and two after it, and two after the sunset, and two after the night, and two before the dawn prayer.
These are twelve rak'ahs. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain them in his day and night, along with the four prayers: the midday, the sunset, the night, and the dawn. It also came from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he encouraged four before the afternoon prayer, saying:
May Allah mercy on a person who prays four Rak'at before the 'Asr prayer.
Bulugh al-Maram 2:263
.
As for those he maintained - (peace and blessings be upon him) - in residence and settlement, which are twelve rak'ahs as mentioned, and they are: four before the midday prayer, two after it, two after the sunset prayer, two after the night prayer, and two before the dawn prayer. The best is to perform them in the house; this is the best, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The most excellent prayer of a person is (that which he prays) in his house except that which is prescribed (the five congregational prayers).
Bulugh al-Maram 2:313
.
And it was prescribed for the people as well - (peace and blessings be upon him) - the tahajjud and the witr. He used to maintain the tahajjud at night and the witr at night; he used to maintain them even in travel. Along with the sunnah of the dawn, he used to maintain this in travel and residence: the witr at night, and the sunnah of the dawn before the obligatory prayer, two rak'ahs. He used to maintain that in travel and residence.
As for the sunnah of the midday, the sunnah of the sunset, and the sunnah of the night, he used to leave them in travel - (peace and blessings be upon him) -, and he would perform them in residence.
And among what he prescribed - (peace and blessings be upon him) - for the people is the sunnah of the mid-morning, two rak'ahs or more. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he advised Abu Hurayrah, and advised Abu al-Darda' regarding the sunnah of the mid-morning, and fasting three days of every month, and the witr before sleeping. The reason for that - and Allah knows best - was that they were occupied with hadith in the first part of the night; so he advised them to do the witr in the first part of the night. As for the one who hopes to stand in the last part of the night, the witr in the last part of the night is better, as was his practice (peace and blessings be upon him), and as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised, where he said:
If anyone is afraid that he may not get up in the latter part of the night, he should observe Witr in the first part of it; and if anyone is eager to get up in the last part of it, he should observe Witr at the end of the night, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed (by the angels) and that is preferable.
Sahih Muslim 755a
Narrated by Muslim in the Sahih.
So the witr in the last part of the night is better for the one who hopes for that and is able to do it. As for the one who fears that he will not rise in the last part of the night, let him do the witr in the first part of the night; this is the best for him. These are the things that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to maintain and call to - (peace and blessings be upon him) -; we have clarified them in the answer to the questioner.
So it is obligatory for the Muslim to maintain these things, and to care for them as our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cared for them, and maintained them - (peace and blessings be upon him) -, and encouraged the Ummah to do them. May Allah send prayers and peace upon him. Yes.
