Question:
This questioner says: I hope you will clarify for me how to perform the prayer, and the night prayer, and the number of rak'ahs, and what is said in the bowing and prostration? And about the verses that it is recommended to recite in each rak'ah?
Answer:
The night prayer is prescribed and a recommended practice, and it is among the deeds of the righteous, and among the deeds of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Al-Muzzammil:1-2] meaning: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Al-Isra:79] the verse, and He said regarding the servants of Allah in Surat al-Furqan: [Al-Furqan:64] And He said regarding the description of the Muslim, believing servants of Allah: [Adh-Dhariyat:17-18] So the night prayer is a confirmed recommended practice, whether in the beginning of the night, or in the middle, or in the end, but the end is better; the last third is better, unless it is difficult for him, in which case he performs the witr in the beginning of the night. He performs witr with one, three, five, seven, or more. He says the taslim after every two, he prays two by two.
And he strives to recite with measured recitation, and he performs witr with one, and there is no fixed limit. He recites whatever is easy from the beginning of the Qur'an, from the middle of the Qur'an, from the end of it, or he organizes his completion; he starts from the beginning of the Qur'an until he completes it, then he starts again. [Al-Muzzammil:4] The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite with a clear recitation, measuring it, so that whoever heard it would benefit from it.
And it is recommended for him to make du'a' at the verse of mercy, and to seek refuge at the verse of warning, and to glorify Allah at the verse of glorification in his tahajjud; as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do.
And the recommended practice is to say the taslim after every two; due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 1319Sahih (Darussalam) meaning: two by two Sunan Abi Dawud 1326Sahih (Al-Albani).
He recites al-Fatihah and [Al-Ikhlas:1] when he reaches the last rak'ah, and he makes qunut in it after the bowing with the prescribed qunut that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught al-Hasan, and it is known among the scholars.
And the recommended practice is not to rush. He is at ease in his bowing, prostration, and recitation. He does not rush, he is at ease. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray with composure and measured recitation, with humility in the bowing and prostration. This is how the believer does not rush, he is at ease in his bowing and prostration, he is at ease in his recitation, and he does not rush, he is humble in it, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And if he performs witr with one, or three, or five, or more, there is no harm. The matter is broad. The night prayer has no fixed limit, but the best of it is eleven, or thirteen, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He says the taslim after every two, and he performs witr with one. This is the best of it. And if he performs witr with more than this, there is no harm.
