Guidance for one whose relatives and friends have cut ties with him for holding fast to the religion

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: She is married to a man who is committed to the teachings of the religion, but this man faces some undutifulness from his relatives and friends because he holds fast to the religion of Islam and the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She asks Your Eminence for guidance on how to deal with these people? And how should she advise her husband? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
As long as he holds fast to his religion, praise be to Allah. He must be patient, persevere, and remain upright, even if some of his relatives cut ties with him. The right of Allah takes precedence over relatives. So let him stand firm and remain upright, and let him treat them in the best manner. He should maintain ties with them if they cut him off, and he should be kind to them if they are unkind to him. He has the good news and a good outcome. Allah the Exalted says in His great Book:
Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah " and then remained on a right courseإِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا
[Surah Fussilat: 30], meaning: in obedience to Him
the angels will descend upon them, [saying], "Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised. (31) We [angels] were your allies in worldly life and [are so] in the Hereafter. And you will have therein whatever your souls desire, and you will have therein whatever you request [or wish] (32) As accommodation from a [Lord who is] Forgiving and Merciful."
[Surah Fussilat: 30-32].
So the believer remains upright in obedience to Allah and strives in that, and so does the believing woman, even if some of her relatives dislike it, or even if some of her relatives cut ties with her. If some of her relatives do not pray while she prays, let her praise Allah and ask Allah for guidance for them. If they are people of intoxicants and she forbids them from intoxicants, let her praise Allah and ask her Lord for guidance for them. If they are in a state of cutting ties and undutifulness, let her avoid that and not be like them in undutifulness and cutting ties, and let her ask Allah for guidance for them. Likewise, if they are people of backbiting and talebearing, she should not agree with them in that, but rather disapprove of it with kind words and wisdom, and their cutting ties should not harm her.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Al-Wasil is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but Al-Wasil is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him.ليس الواصل بالمكافي، وإنما الواصل الذي إذا قطعت رحمه وصلها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5991
. This is the true, complete one who maintains ties. As for the one who maintains ties with them if they maintain ties with him, and cuts them off if they cut him off, that is merely reciprocation. But the one who truly maintains ties is the one who maintains ties with them even if they cut him off, and is kind to them even if they are unkind to him. This is the complete one who maintains ties. For this reason, in another hadith, it is narrated that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have relatives who I maintain ties with, but they cut me off. I am kind to them, but they are unkind to me. I am patient with them, but they are ignorant toward me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
If you are as you say, it is as if you are pouring molten lead upon them.لئن كنت كما قلت لكأنما تسفهم المل
, meaning: the hot embers
there would always remain with you on behalf of Allahولا يزال معك من الله ظهير
Sahih Muslim 2558a
, meaning: upon them
so long as you adhere to this (path of righteousness)ما دمت على ذلك
Sahih Muslim 2558a
.
So Allah will help him against them and enable him to deal with them. He is the one who is correct, and they are the ones who are wrong. Let him be patient, seek reward from Allah, and ask Allah for guidance for them. Their cutting ties should not harm him. The sin is upon them. But he should maintain ties with them as much as he can. If they are poor, he should be kind to them. If he passes by them, he should greet them. If he meets them, he should greet them, even if they do not respond. If he sees from them what is not right, he should enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, even if they do not respond. If they are wronged, he should support them against those who wronged them, helping them to leave the wrongdoing and to return the wrongdoers to them. He should be better than them, interceding for them in the good that benefits them, and being a cause for their guidance.
So the point is that he should treat them in a way that pleases Allah regarding them, and strive to benefit them and pray for their guidance, even if they cut him off. This is the path of the people of good and guidance. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
