Question:
The questioner from Makkah al-Mukarramah says, “Your Eminence, the Shaykh: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever performs Wudu on Friday, then he will receive the blessing, and whoever performs Ghusl then Ghusl is more virtuous.من توضأ يوم الجمعة فبها ونعمت، ومن اغتسل فالغسل أفضل
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 497Hasan (Darussalam)
narrated by Ahmad, and the hadith:
Taking a bath (before coming to Friday prayers) is obligatory on every adult.غسل الجمعة واجب على كل محتلم
Riyad as-Salihin 1152
narrated by the two Shaykhs. How do we combine these two hadiths? Is the bath a recommended practice or obligatory? What is the meaning of
for every adultعلى كل محتلم
? Please explain the hadiths to us?”

Answer:
The meaning of
obligatoryواجب
is: it is emphasized. It does not mean the type of obligation that incurs sin if neglected; it means it is emphasized. This is why the hadith includes the meaning: “and that he should use the miswak and apply perfume.” Using the miswak and applying perfume are recommended practices according to the consensus of all scholars, and the hadith states:
Whoever performs ablution on Friday, then goes to the mosque and prays whatever is prescribed for him, then listens until ... the sermon, it is recorded for him ... he has the reward of Friday and what follows it until the next Friday.من توضأ يوم الجمعة ثم أتى المسجد وصلى ما قدر له ثم أنصت حتى ... الخطبة كتب له .. كان له ثواب الجمعة وما بعدها إلى جمعة أخرى
.
The point is that there is no harm in performing ablution and not taking a bath, but the bath is better. His statement in the narration of Abu Sa’id:
obligatoryواجب
means: it is emphasized; because this is how the narrations are combined, or it is an emphasized bath and not an obligatory one. This is the correct view. Yes.
