Causes of Turning Toward Allah and Turning Away from Him

Question:
This questioner (K. M. M.) from Kuwait says: Your Eminence! We know that the heart has moments of turning toward and turning away. How does that happen? And how should a Muslim strive to be constantly in a state of turning toward Allah? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
The heart has moments of turning toward and turning away, without a doubt. When one remembers Allah, reflects upon the Qur'an, and recalls the Hereafter, Paradise, Hellfire, and death, the heart turns toward Him. But when one engages with spouses, or desires, or trade, one may become heedless. It is necessary for the believer to strive for the means of his heart's turning toward Allah, by striving to read the Qur'an, increasing the remembrance of Allah, and remembering the Hereafter, Paradise, and Hellfire, until the heart settles, directed toward Allah (Mighty and Majestic), desiring what is with Him .
One should also guard against the causes of turning away and deviating, such as amusements, keeping company with fools, and other things that prevent one from good and truth, and that cause the heart to turn away.
The point is that keeping company with the righteous, increasing the remembrance of Allah, increasing the reading of the Qur'an, and reflecting on the Hereafter, Paradise, and Hellfire are among the causes of turning toward Allah, desiring what is with Allah, rectifying the heart, and making it humble. If a person turns away from that and occupies himself with the world, its trade, and its people by talking with them, and with the people of gossip, then that is among the causes of the heart's deviation.
And more severe than this are sins, violations, and heedlessness regarding the remembrance of Allah. We ask Allah for well-being and safety. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you, and may Allah reward you, Your Eminence.
