Question:
In his second question, this questioner says, “Your Eminence, the Shaykh: Human life is divided into three: the life of this world, which is what we are living; the life of the Hereafter, which is well known; and between the life of this world and the Hereafter is the life of the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection). What is the life of the barzakh? And is the person in it with his body and his soul?”
Answer:
The life of the barzakh is according to one’s life in this world. The believer enjoys the barzakh, and his soul is in Paradise, while his body receives some of the pleasure. As for the disbeliever, his soul is presented to the Fire, and he receives his share of the punishment, and his body receives its share of the punishment. This is the life of the barzakh. So the believer is in happiness and pleasure.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that the souls of the believers are in Paradise, roaming in Paradise wherever they wish. As for the disbelievers, just as Allah informed us about the family of Pharaoh: [Surah Ghafir: 46], the souls of the disbelievers are being punished, and their bodies receive their share of the punishment until Allah resurrects everyone. Then the souls of the believers go to Paradise, and the souls of the disbelievers go to the Fire—may Allah grant us safety—eternally in it. These are eternal in Paradise, and these are eternal in the Fire. May Allah grant us safety. Yes.
