The ruling on repeating the Basmala and writing it to ward off harm
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to the letter from our sister listener in Iraq, Kirkuk Governorate (N. M). We presented part of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode she asks and says: Are these statements correct: That whoever reads the Basmala twenty-one times when going to sleep, Allah will protect him that night from the accursed Shaytan, from theft, and from sudden death, and will avert from him every calamity?
And also: If the Basmala is written on a piece of paper one hundred and thirty times on the first day of Muharram, and a person carries it, no harm will befall him? And also, no harm will befall his household for the duration of his life? And also, if al-Rahim is written on a piece of paper twenty-one times and hung by a person suffering from a headache, it will benefit him?
And many, many statements about the Basmala. I read these statements in such-and-such a book, and you name it—Your Eminence, the Shaykh—I hope you will be kind enough to clarify the truth regarding these statements and those books, even if you do not name them, and how you warn people against them? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
So, what you read, my sister in Allah, about the Basmala, and that if it is read twenty-one times when going to sleep, such-and-such happens, and if it is written one hundred and thirty times, such-and-such happens, and so on, all of this is invalid, has no basis, and is not true. Rather, this is what the fabricators have fabricated and the liars have lied about, so it should not be relied upon nor should one pay attention to it. However, the Basmala is prescribed; a person says Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim when going to sleep, says it when reading, says it when eating, and says it when entering the house. But with this number, twenty-one, or one hundred and thirty, or such-and-such, or writing such-and-such.
All of this has no origin, all of this has no basis. Rather, it is from the religious innovations introduced by the deviants, the misguides, and the corrupt. But what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained is sufficient for that; for it is prescribed for the believing man and woman, at the beginning of the night and at the beginning of the day, to recite the prescribed adhkar and the prescribed seekings of refuge, including saying:Sunan Abi Dawud 3898Sahih (Al-Albani), three times in the morning and evening, and Sunan Ibn Majah 3869, three times in the morning and evening.
All of this is among the causes of safety and well-being from every evil. Likewise, reciting Ayat al-Kursi when going to sleep is among the causes of safety and protection from every evil. Likewise, reciting [Al-Ikhlas:1] and the two Mu'awwidhat after every prayer, and reciting them three times after Fajr and Maghrib. All of this is what Allah has prescribed, and it is among the causes of protection from every harm. As for what the liars have lied about, it is obligatory to beware of it. Yes.
