The Condition of Ablution for Touching the Mushaf

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My Shaykh, I have a lengthy letter from one of the listening brothers. The author of these questions says: Your brother in Allah, 'Abd al-'Alim Rajab Musa, an Egyptian working in Saudi Arabia. Our brother has a large number of questions. For example, he asks and says: I am following the memorization of the Noble Qur'an in the Noble Mushaf, but often I am in a state of ritual impurity. Is it obligatory for me to perform ablution? Or should I be treated like the students?

Answer:
You must perform ablution if any of the things that break ablution occur. You must perform ablution, and you must not touch the Mushaf except in a state of ablution. However, if it is from memory, there is no harm. For this reason, it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
no-one should touch the Qur'an unless he was pureلا يمس القرآن إلا طاهر
Muwatta Malik 15:1
, and the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) issued a ruling accordingly. This is the position of the majority of scholars, including the four Imams and others, that one must not touch the Mushaf except while in a state of ablution—ritual purity. Thus, one in a state of major ritual impurity, or one in a state of minor ritual impurity, must not touch it.
As for if you are reading from memory, there is no harm in reading from memory if you are not in a state of major ritual impurity, but only in a state of minor ritual impurity. However, one in a state of major ritual impurity must not read, neither from memory nor by touching the Mushaf, until he performs the full ritual bath.
