Ruling on reading from the mushaf without wudu'?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
His last question asks: Is reading the Qur'an from the mushaf without wudu' forbidden or permissible?

Answer:
It is not permissible for a Muslim to read the Qur'an from the mushaf while he is not in a state of wudu', nor while he is in a state of major ritual impurity. One does not read the Qur'an except in a state of ritual purity if he is touching the mushaf. However, if he is not touching the mushaf, there is no harm in reading from memory while in a state of minor ritual impurity, unless he is in a state of major ritual impurity, in which case he does not read until he performs the full ritual bath. He does not read, nor does he touch the mushaf at all. But if he is not in a state of major ritual impurity, it is permissible for him to read without touching the mushaf, but he must not touch the mushaf except while in a state of ritual purity. This is the position of the majority of scholars, and it is the ruling issued by the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The well-known and famous hadith indicates this, and it is a good, sound hadith: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to the people of Yemen:
No one may touch the Qur'an except one who is in a state of ritual purity.ألا يمس القرآن إلا طاهر
, and Allah the Exalted says in His great Book:
None touch it except the purified.لا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ
[al-Waqi'ah: 79]; meaning: the mushaf.
Therefore, it is obligatory for the Muslim not to touch it except in a state of ritual purity, but there is no blame on him for reading from memory while not in a state of ritual purity, provided he is not in a state of major ritual impurity. As for the one in a state of major ritual impurity, he must perform the full ritual bath before he reads; he does not read, neither from memory nor from the mushaf, until he performs the full ritual bath. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not prevented from the Qur'an by anything except major ritual impurity, as the hadith came from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not prevented from the Qur'an by anything except major ritual impurity." Yes.
