What is the meaning of: {O you who believe, be supporters of Allah}?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says in His clear Book, in Surat al-Saff, verse fourteen: I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected one. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah."
[al-Saff:14]. A listener from Sudan, named 'Umar Samir Dawud, cited this noble verse and asked about its interpretation, saying specifically: How did 'Isa say, "Who are my helpers," and then the disciples said, "We are the helpers of Allah," and not "We are your helpers"?

Answer:
The verse is clear that they should be the supporters of Allah, so it commands the believers to be the supporters of Allah. The supporters of Allah are the supporters of His religion. Allah is not in need of any of the people; Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is free of need of His servants and is not in need of them. So the supporters of Allah are the supporters of His religion, its callers, and its defenders, until it becomes manifest among the people and until the people adhere to it, as He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: :
O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
[Muhammad:7], (support Allah) meaning: support His religion and His Shari'ah and what He has commanded, and support the leaving of His prohibitions, and so on. And His saying, Glorified and Exalted is He:
And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
[Al-Hajj 22:40]
the ones whom We have established in the land, they establish the prayer and give zakah and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong [al-Hajj:40-41].
This is the support of Allah: by establishing the prayer, giving the zakah, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, calling to Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) , establishing jihad in the path of Allah, deterring the wrongdoers from their falsehood, and establishing the hudud upon them, among other things. This is the support for the religion of Allah. Among this is the famous hadith of Ibn 'Abbas:
Fear Allah, and He will protect you.
, meaning: guard the religion of Allah by following it and being upright upon it, and He, the Exalted, will guard you. For the reward is of the same kind as the deed. Whoever guards Allah by following His religion, Allah will guard him. And whoever supports Allah, Allah will support him. So the meaning of His, the Exalted, saying:
O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah
[al-Saff:14], is: be among the helpers of the religion of Allah, be among the followers of the Shari'ah, the callers to the truth, and the enjoiners of what is right and forbidders of what is wrong.
Then it was mentioned regarding 'Isa (peace be upon him) that he said: "Who are my supporters to Allah?" He said to the disciples: "Who are my supporters to Allah," meaning: who are my supporters in directing [people] to Allah, calling to Him, and following His Shari'ah. Thus, the people of faith should be supporters of Allah, supporters of the messengers, and supporters of the callers to the truth. So the meaning of "Who are my supporters to Allah" is: who are my supporters in calling to Allah, directing [people] to Him, and establishing His religion? "So the disciples said," and they are the supporters. A "hawari" (disciple) is a supporter. He is called a hawari because of his support for the truth and his standing for the truth. This is like the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
for every Prophet there is a helper and my helper is Zubair.
Sahih Muslim 2415a
, meaning: al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam, when he volunteered for the Battle of the Confederates by his command (peace and blessings be upon him).
So the disciples are the supporters. They are the supporters of the truth. So they said in this verse:
We are supporters for Allah
[al-Saff:14]; because they knew that supporting the Prophet is supporting Allah. So they did not say: "We are your supporters." They brought the higher matter, which was the intention of 'Isa (peace be upon him). For this reason, they said: "We are the supporters of Allah," meaning: we are the supporters whom you called to be with you in supporting the religion of Allah. So he said: "Who are my supporters to Allah," and they said: "We are the supporters of Allah," meaning: we are the supporters who support the religion of Allah, and support the callers to it, among whom is 'Isa (peace be upon him). So they chose a phrase that is more complete, greater, and more noble in their right when they said: "We are the supporters of Allah"; because the supporters of the messengers are the supporters of Allah. Whoever supports the Messenger has supported Allah, and whoever supports the truth has supported Allah. So they chose this word, which was the intention of 'Isa (peace be upon him). Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He benefit us with your knowledge.
