The Ruling on Dyeing the Hair Black

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
You also ask and say: What is the ruling on dyeing the hair or the beard black if a man intends to do so?

Answer:
It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the prohibition against changing white hair to black. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Change this gray hair, and avoid blackغيروا هذا الشيب، واجتنبوا السواد
And in the other wording:
And keep them away from the Blackوجنبوه السواد
in the story of Abu Quhafah, the father of al-Ṣiddīq (may Allah be pleased with him). He was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of the Conquest, and his head and beard were as white as a pigeon’s beak. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his white hair be changed, and that he avoid black.
Several hadiths came regarding this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), all of which indicate the legitimacy of changing white hair to something other than black. Among them is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their hair), so differ from them.إن اليهود والنصارى لا يصبغون فخالفوهم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam)
And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
At the end of time there will be people who will use this black dye like the crops of doves who will not experience the fragrance of Paradise.يكون في آخر الزمان قوم يخضبوا بالسواد، كحواصل الحمام، لا يريحون رائحة الجنة
Sunan Abi Dawud 4212Sahih (Al-Albani)
Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i with a sound chain from the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). These hadiths and what came in their meaning all indicate the legitimacy of changing [the hair], but not to black; rather, to yellow, red, with henna and katam, so that it is not black, but between black and red, or it is red, or it is yellow. All of this is permissible, yes.
