The Ruling of Islam on Cosmetic Surgery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The following is a letter sent by our brother Isma'il al-Bashir 'Ali al-Sudani, who works in the state of Qatar. Our brother has three questions. In his first question, he asks about the ruling of Islam on cosmetic surgery?

Answer:
This requires a detailed explanation:
If the surgery does not change anything of what Allah has commanded to remain, there is no harm; so if the beautification does not involve tattooing on the face of a person, which is tattooing, and does not involve cutting off a limb, but rather brightens the face, or brightens the body, or corrects what is crooked, such as a hand that has a crookedness to be corrected, or a leg that has a crookedness, or a nose that has a defect to be corrected, there is no harm in that, or teeth that have a defect to be corrected, such as some being too long or some being crooked, or blackness on the lip or something that can be removed, and beauty is achieved without contradicting the command of Allah in any of that, there is no blame in that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade tattooing, and forbade joining hair, and did not forbid beautifying oneself. Yes,
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Graceإن الله جميل يحب الجمال
Sahih Muslim 91a
.
Likewise, if there is an extra finger in the leg or in the hand, the correct view is that there is no harm in removing it if the doctor determines that its removal carries no danger. And so, if there is a tumor in the face or in the hand that can be removed by treatment, there is no harm, or black spots on his body or face that can be treated, all of this carries no blame; because it is beautification that does not contradict the command of Allah. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah bless you. Would you be kind, O Shaykh, to specify the things that are forbidden, even if the intention is permissible beautification?

The Shaykh: Like what was mentioned before, joining hair—joining hair—is not permissible. They call it the wig that is worn on the head; it is not permissible; because it is more severe than joining hair, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade joining hair, and cursed the one who joins hair.
Likewise, the issue of tattooing, where needles and the like are inserted into the face, or into the hand, until blood comes out, and then something of kohl or other things is placed in it so that it becomes a tattoo on the face or on the hand, this is from the category of what is forbidden. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who tattoos, the one who gets tattooed, the one who joins hair, and the one who gets her hair joined.
Likewise, filing the teeth, improving them by filing the space between them, so that they become filed, this is forbidden. But if the tooth is crooked to be corrected, or extra to correct the excess and remove the excess, or black to be corrected, there is no harm in that. This is not from what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade.

The presenter: May Allah bless you and benefit us with your knowledge.
