Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to the letter of our sister listener, Umm Aminah Hasan, from the Wasit Governorate, al-Suwayrah district. We presented some of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode she asks and says:
My father asked me to send you this question: He combines the prayers. For example, he prays Maghrib and 'Isha' at the same time; it is difficult for him to pray them in their proper times because he is large in body, weighing two hundred and twenty kilograms. He says: When I stand on my feet, they hurt me greatly. So what do you advise him?
May Allah reward you with the best reward.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: : [al-Taghabun:16] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when some of the sick complained to him: Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani) If one is unable to stand, he prays sitting, and he prays each prayer in its time: the midday prayer in its time, the afternoon prayer in its time, the sunset prayer in its time, and the night prayer in its time. The mere fact that he is unable to stand does not make him combine the two prayers.
However, if he has an illness that makes it difficult for him to separate the prayers and stand for each prayer in its time—because of his illness and pain—that is another matter. A sick person may combine if he is sick and suffers from standing for each one, due to having illnesses such as fever or other illnesses that cause him hardship in performing each prayer separately in its time. In that case, there is no harm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted the woman with irregular bleeding to combine, because she has a type of illness. So a sick person who has pain from fever or other things may combine between the midday and afternoon prayers, and between the sunset and night prayers. As for the dawn prayer, it is prayed in its time and is not combined with any other, neither before nor after it; it is prayed alone.
Nevertheless, he should observe standing in the prayer, even if it is light, reciting al-Fatihah and whatever is easy for him with it, even if it is little, while he is standing; because he is commanded to stand. If he is unable and it is difficult for him, he prays sitting, and praise be to Allah. Yes.
