The Ruling on Being Lax About Free Mixing with Relatives

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I live in a house with my father and mother, in a community where people are accustomed to visiting one another without feeling any embarrassment about it, men and women alike, especially among relatives. In this house of mine, my brothers share our meals with their wives, without observing the hijab, especially during the iftar in Ramadan. They know that this is not permissible, but they argue that this has been their custom for a long time. Is there any advice? I will take what was recorded from this lecture and play it for them to hear.

Answer:
Yes, this is a reality. Some people have been lax about eating together, men and women, and sitting together with the women uncovering their faces. It may even be worse than that: uncovering the heads, the arms, and so on. This is undoubtedly a great evil that is not permissible. It is obligatory for the Muslim to fear Allah and to advise his family against such things. The student of knowledge has importance and status, for the scholars are the successors of the messengers. Therefore, the student of knowledge should advise his fathers, mothers, sisters, and all his family.
This action is not permissible. It is not permissible for men and women to sit together when the men are not mahram to the women, and the women are uncovering. No, the women should have a place where they break their fast and eat among themselves, and the men in another place; so that no one is affected by anyone, and so that some do not cause hardship for others. As for sitting all together without hijab or covering from the husband’s brother or the husband’s uncle; this is an evil that is not permissible. And Allah, Exalted and Majestic is He, says:
And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.
[Al-Ahzab: 53], and He, Glorified is He, says:
not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathersوَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ
[An-Nur 24:31]
the verse [An-Nur: 31], and He, Exalted and Majestic is He, says:
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garmentsيَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ
[Al-Ahzab 33:59]
the verse [Al-Ahzab: 59].
It is obligatory for the student of knowledge, and for the head of the family, and for the leader of the family, to pay attention to this matter, and to direct his sons and brothers to what Allah has made obligatory, and for the believer to conduct himself with the manners of Allah. The women should be separate so that they do not have to strain themselves, and the men should be separate. It is not permissible for them to be with the men uncovering their faces, or their heads, or the rest of their bodies. Rather, they should be covered and wearing hijab when mixing. And a man should not be alone with his brother’s wife, or with his uncle’s or maternal uncle’s wife, without a third person present. It is not permissible. Seclusion is not permissible, and uncovering and exposing oneself is not permissible. Rather, one must stay away from this, as Allah has legislated and commanded.
