Exegesis of the verse: (O you who believe, look to yourselves)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner asks about the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guidedيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 105], stating that some people take this verse as an excuse for not enjoining good and forbidding evil. What is your opinion?

Answer:
This verse was commented upon by the Commander of the Faithful, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) at the beginning of his caliphate when he addressed the people, saying: "O people, you are reading this verse and placing it in the wrong context. I heard the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
lf the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.
Musnad Ahmad 1Sahih (Darussalam)
," and he recited the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guidedيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:105]
.
He (may Allah be pleased with him) clarified that the absence of harm is conditioned by guidance:
Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided
[Al-Ma'idah 5:105]
. Guidance is only achieved by fulfilling obligations and avoiding prohibitions. Among the obligations is enjoining good and forbidding evil. Therefore, it is not sufficient for you to be guided unless you fulfill the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil; otherwise, you are not guided, and that will harm you.
Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided
[Al-Ma'idah 5:105]
If you enjoin good, forbid evil, fulfill the obligations, and leave the prohibitions, then whoever goes astray after that will not harm you. It is not in your hand to guide them:
Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills.
[Al-Baqarah: 272]. What is obligatory upon you is conveying the message, explaining it, enjoining good, and forbidding evil. If those whom you conveyed the message to, whom you commanded, and whom you called do not listen to you, that will not harm you:
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills
[Al-Qasas: 56].
