The questioner : What is the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided
[Al-Ma'idah 5:105]
?

The Shaykh : The meaning of this noble verse is that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) commanded the believers to take care of themselves and to fulfill what Allah has made obligatory upon them. If they do so, then no harm will come to them from one who goes astray. Among the things that are incumbent upon them, namely the believers, is that they call to Allah, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong. If they call to Allah, or enjoin what is right, or forbid what is wrong, and no one responds to them, then that will not harm them. This is because those who were called, or enjoined, or forbidden, if they go astray, they only go astray to their own detriment, as Allah the Exalted said:
whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul, and whoever goes astray only goes astray [in violation] against it
[Yunus 10:108]
. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
