Question:
After this, a message was sent by the listener: Abdul Qadir Umar Ayyadrous from Jeddah, who says: I am Somali. I am inquiring about the interpretation of the saying of the Righteous One (Blessed and Exalted is He):
O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guidedيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 105]?

Answer:
The meaning of the verse is that it is obligatory for the believer to strive against his own self, and to fear Allah, by obeying His commands and refraining from His prohibitions. It will not harm him if someone goes astray, provided he himself is guided and upright in the matter of Allah. This includes enjoining good and forbidding evil, calling to Allah, and fulfilling the obligation he has toward his family members, such as advising them, guiding them, commanding them, and forbidding them; for guidance is not complete except through this. Allah says:
if you have been guidedإِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 105], so guidance is not complete except by fulfilling what Allah has made obligatory upon him. Some people may think that its meaning is that it does not harm him if someone disobeys and disbelieves, even if he sits with him or eats with him, or that it does not harm him if he does not forbid him. No, this does harm him. It is obligatory for him to enjoin good, forbid evil, and guide to what is good, so that he may be guided. Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) , when he assumed the caliphate, gave a sermon to the people, recited this verse for them, and said:
O people, you are reciting this verse and placing it in the wrong context, and I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: If people see an evil and do not change it, it is likely that Allah will encompass them with His punishment.
.
So the meaning is: it is obligatory for the believer to enjoin good and forbid evil, and he should not say, "I am safe, and I have not done what is wrong." No. He must forbid his brother from what is wrong, and he must command him to do what is good. Guidance is not complete except through this, otherwise he may harm himself
Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guidedلا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:105]
. If he does not enjoin good and does not forbid evil, he will not attain complete guidance; his guidance will be incomplete until he fulfills the obligation he has regarding enjoining good and forbidding evil. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
