Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A hadith attributed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported, in which he said regarding a child:
Play with him for seven years, discipline him for seven years, be his friend for seven years, then leave him to his own devices.لاعبه سبعًا، وأدّبه سبعًا، وآخه سبعًا، ثم اترك حبله على غاربه
. It is often cited against some fathers who are strict with their children when they deviate or fall short in performing the prayers in congregation. What is the authenticity of this hadith? May Allah reward you.

Answer:
This hadith has no basis and is not known; rather, it is among the fabrications—may Allah protect us from it:
Play with him for seven years, discipline him for seven years, be his friend for seven years.لاعبه سبعًا، وأدبه سبعًا، وآخه سبعًا
All of this has no basis—may Allah help us.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Command your children to pray at the age of seven, strike them for it at the age of ten, and separate them in their beds.مُروا أولادكم بالصلاة لسبعٍ، واضربوهم عليها لعشرٍ، وفرِّقوا بينهم في المضاجع
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 3:5
. Therefore, the father is commanded to care for his children, guide them to good, and strike them when striking is necessary after the age of ten. He must never abandon them, even if they grow up—may Allah help us.
