The Ruling on Videos That Undermine Creed and Morals
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We love you for the sake of Allah the Exalted. It is not hidden from you the widespread spread of video films and their prevalence among Muslims in their markets and homes. Undoubtedly, they have a major impact on the beliefs, values, and morals of Muslims.
What is the ruling on watching these films? What is the ruling on selling, buying, and renting their shops? And what is obligatory upon scholars and people regarding them?
Answer:
The matter of video has details:
If it is sold what harms morals and harms religion, it is forbidden. The state has issued a general prohibition against that, and the Council of Senior Scholars wrote to them, and the competent authority has proceeded to prohibit all vile films.
Therefore, whoever knows of something vile must denounce it. It is not permissible to sell it or buy it. Muslims must advise one another, report to the authorities those who sell vile films, and denounce them; so that there is cooperation in righteousness and piety and enjoining of truth. This is the religion of Allah, and cooperation is necessary in it.
So films that spread vices, and depict the free mixing of women with men, or a man with his wife, or a man with a man in sodomy, or similar types of corruption, this is a great evil. It is not permissible to sell it, nor to deal in it, nor to film it. Rather, it must be denounced and torn up, and it must be reported to the authorities, and its status made clear, so that these evils are removed, and so that Muslims are safe from their harm. It is not permissible to sell them at all, nor to buy them—we seek refuge in Allah from that.
We ask Allah to grant the state success in doing what is obligatory toward them in the best manner.
