What is the ruling on the cursing and invoking of curses that occurs in sports arenas?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
During sports matches or enthusiastic play, some people slip up and fall into cursing, insulting, and invoking curses. What is the ruling on this? And how can one get rid of it?

Answer:
It is obligatory for the believer and the player to maintain self-control wherever he is, not to be swept along with the people, and not to imitate the people of deviation. Rather, he must control himself and struggle against his soul, and not let the harm of others toward him, or the cursing of others toward him, or the discouragement of others toward him, or anything similar, lead him to curse, invoke curses, insult, and accustom his tongue to what is not befitting. Rather, he must have endurance and patience, even if others wrong him, so that he does not accustom his tongue to what is not befitting, such as insulting, cursing, lying, and the like.
A person may become angry when he finds from others what angers him, but he needs to bear it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The strong-man is not one who wrestles well but the strong man is one who controls himself when he is in a fit of rage.ليس الشديد بالصّرعة، إنما الشديد الذي يملك نفسَه عند الغضب
Sahih Muslim 2609a
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abusing a Muslim is an outrage and fighting against him is unbeliefسباب المسلم فسوقٌ، وقتاله كفرٌ
Sahih Muslim 64a
, and it is agreed upon that it is authentic. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Cursing a believer is like killing himلعن المؤمن كقتله
, so the matter is great. And he said:
The believer does not insult the honor of others, nor curse, nor commit Fahishah, nor is he foul.ليس المؤمنُ بالطَّعَّان، ولا اللَّعَّان، ولا الفاحش، ولا البذيء
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1977Hasan (Darussalam)
.
But if he takes retribution, there is no blame on him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When two persons indulge in hurling (abuses) upon one another, it would be the first one who would be the sinner so long as the oppressed does not transgress the limits.المستَبَّان ما قالا فعلى البادئ ما لم يعتدِ المظلوم
Sahih Muslim 2587
. So if a person curses him and he responds to him with only the same curse, there is no blame on him, and the sin is on the one who started it. If he adds to it, the sin of the addition is on the one who added. If he pardons him and forgives, that is better, as He said in His great Book:
And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allahوَجَزَاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ سَيِّئَةٌ مِثْلُهَا فَمَنْ عَفَا وَأَصْلَحَ فَأَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ
[Al-Shura: 40]. So if he says to you, "May Allah curse you," or "May Allah disgrace you," or "May Allah kill you," and you say to him only what he said, without adding anything, the sin is on him. If you pardon and overlook, the reward is for you. If you add, the sin of the addition is on you. He said to you, "May Allah disgrace you," and you said, "May Allah disgrace you and curse you," you added an addition, so the sin of the addition is on you. He said, "May Allah kill you," and you said to him, "May Allah kill you and curse you," so the addition is on you.
So retribution is only to the extent of what he said, without addition: there is nothing wrong with this as retribution, and the sin is on him as long as the wronged person does not transgress. If he transgresses, the sin of his transgression is on him. And whoever pardons and improves, his reward is with Allah, and he will have a good outcome, as He, the Exalted, said:
but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allahفَمَنْ عَفَا وَأَصْلَحَ فَأَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ
[Al-Shura: 40], and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honorما زاد الله عبدًا بعفوٍ إلا عزًّا
Sahih Muslim 2588
