The ruling on a man cursing his wife
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He also asks and says: What is the ruling on a man cursing his wife, and does that make her forbidden to him or not?
Answer: A man cursing his wife is a reprehensible matter and one of the major sins, and so is his cursing of people. Cursing is among the major sins, and it is not permissible for a Muslim to engage in it with his Muslim brothers. It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: This indicates the gravity of the matter, as it was likened to killing, which shows that it is among the major sins. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: Sahih Muslim 64a It is agreed upon that this is authentic. This indicates that verbal abuse—which is cursing and insulting—is open sinfulness, meaning it is among the sins. Therefore, it is obligatory to abandon it and to guard against it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: Sahih Ibn Hibban 47:195 It was also reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1977Hasan (Darussalam) Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to curse his wife, and it is not permissible for her to curse her husband. It is not permissible for him to curse his children, and it is not permissible for her to curse her children. Likewise, it is not permissible to verbally abuse or curse other Muslims. However, his wife does not become forbidden to him because of that. If he cursed her, she does not become forbidden to him on that account; his wife remains lawful to him. But he has done wrong, and he must repent to Allah. He must also seek his wife's forgiveness for what occurred regarding his cursing of her. There is no power and no strength except with Allah. Yes.
