Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on lengthening the fingernails and wearing a garment with half-length sleeves for a woman? And what is the ruling on cutting the hair?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded regarding trimming the mustache, plucking the armpit hair, cutting the fingernails, and shaving the pubic hair: that one should not leave it for more than forty nights. Anas said: "He set a time limit for us in trimming the mustache, cutting the fingernails, plucking the armpit hair, and shaving the pubic hair, that we should not leave it for more than forty nights." So if the fingernail, or the mustache, or the pubic hair, or the armpit hair remains for less than forty days, there is no blame on him, but it is not permissible for it to remain for more than that.
And if she lengthens her fingernails with the intention of imitating the disbelievers, it becomes forbidden due to this intention. If she lengthens her fingernails or does something with the intention of imitating the disbelieving women, this is not permissible:Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani).
As for wearing short sleeves among women, there is nothing wrong with it, but not among non-mahram men. As for among women, there is nothing wrong with it. However, she should get accustomed to long sleeves so that she does not get accustomed to short ones; because if she gets accustomed to short ones, she may expose them in front of her husband's brother, or her servant, or her driver. She may become lax. So it is better for her to get accustomed to long sleeves and long garments, so that when she goes out here or there, she is in ample and sufficient clothing.
The Sunnah for the believing woman is that her garments should be long, covering her feet by a span to an arm's length, or she should have socks on her feet that cover them. The sleeve should be long, covering her entire arm to her wrist. And if there is a non-mahram man present, she should cover her hands, just as she covers her face or her body.
As for among women, the matter is broad in this regard, but it is feared that she will get accustomed to it. For this reason, we said: it is better for her not to get accustomed to it, even among women, so that she does not do it in front of others.
