Question:
What do we say to those who have religious violations, and who say: "I recite Surat al-Mulk every night, and it saves its owner from the punishment of the grave, and consequently from the punishment of the Hereafter. Is this sufficient for him?"
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions.
This is a great surah, the surah of[Al-Mulk 67:1], and there is a hadith that it interceded for its owner. The meaning of this—if the hadith is free from defects—is that he acted upon it and fulfilled its rights, so it interceded. The Qur'an intercedes for its people on the Day of Resurrection. The Noble Qur'an intercedes for its people on the Day of Resurrection if they act upon it. But if they neglect it, it becomes a proof against them, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 2437Sahih (Darussalam). So the Qur'an is a proof for its people if they act upon it, adhere to what the Qur'an commands them, and preserve it. And whoever neglects that and does not adhere to it; it becomes a proof against him, and one of the causes of his entering the Fire.
So it is obligatory for the believing man and woman: to care for the Qur'an and act upon it. Whoever acts upon it; it becomes an intercessor for him to Paradise. And whoever neglects it; it becomes an intercessor against him, and an adversary for him to the Fire. We ask Allah for safety.
