The Ruling on the Hadith: (When will you stop mentioning the wicked man . . . )

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My brother has a question that I wished had been raised in the introduction of this episode. I hope there is enough time left in the program for it. He asks: What is the tracing of this hadith, and what is its degree of authenticity? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When will you stop mentioning the wicked man? Expose him so that people will be wary of him.متى ترعوون عن ذكر الفاجر، اهتكوه حتى يحذره الناس
And if there are other hadiths with the same meaning, what are they? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
I do not know the status of this hadith, nor do I know its authenticity. What is most likely in my opinion is that it is not authentic. However, there is a distinction regarding the wicked man: The scholars stated that if he displays a wrong, it is permissible to speak about him, and backbiting is permitted in this case; because he has displayed the wrong. So if he displays the wrong, it is permissible to backbite him regarding the wrong he displayed, but not regarding his hidden sins. There is what indicates this in the Sunnah from many aspects, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), indicating that the open sinner has no protection from backbiting regarding what he has made public. This is also indicated by incidents of the actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among which is that he passed by a funeral and the Muslims spoke well of the deceased, so he said:
It became obligatory وجبت
, and he passed by another funeral and they spoke ill of the deceased, so he said:
It became obligatoryوجبت
. He was asked about that, and it was said: O Messenger of Allah! What was decreed? He said:
You praised this, so Paradise has been affirmed to him; and you spoke badly of this, so Hell has been affirmed to him. You people are Allah's witnesses on earth.هذا أثنيتم عليه خيرًا فوجبت له الجنة، وهذا أثنيتم عليه شرًا فوجبت له النار، أنتم شهداء الله في الأرض
Sahih al-Bukhari 1367
.
That indicates that mentioning the wicked regarding their apparent sins is without blame. For this reason, he did not rebuke them for testifying against him with evil; rather, he said:
The Fire was decreed for him.وجبت له النار
. We ask Allah for safety.

The presenter: We ask Allah for safety. May Allah reward you with good.
Your Eminence, in conclusion, I direct to you my sincere thanks, after thanking Allah , for your kindness in answering the honorable listeners. I hope that the meeting will be renewed and that you are in the best of conditions.

The Shaykh: We hope for that.
