What is the meaning of: {Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him}?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He also asks about the interpretation of the saying of the Truth, Blessed and Exalted is He:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
[Al-Nisa: 48]?

Answer:
This verse is a great verse, and it is a clear, decisive verse that was revealed regarding the people of shirk (associating partners with Allah) if they die upon shirk. If a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah) dies, he is not forgiven. However, if he embraces Islam and repents to Allah, he is forgiven. But if he dies upon shirk, he is not forgiven. For this reason, He, the Exalted, said in this verse in two places in Surat al-Nisa:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Himإِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ
[Al-Nisa: 48], meaning that His sins are not forgiven, but rather he is thrown into the Fire because of them. As He said in the other verse:
Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
[Al-Ma'idah: 72]. So the mushrik, if he dies upon shirk, is not forgiven; rather, he has the Fire forever, forever and ever, and Paradise is forbidden to him. He, the Exalted, said:
But if they had associated others with Allah, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.
[Al-An'am: 88].
The point is that shirk is the greatest of sins and the ugliest of abominations. Whoever dies upon it without repenting is not forgiven, and Paradise is forbidden to him by the text of this verse, which is His saying, the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Himإِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ
[Al-Nisa: 48]. Then He, the Exalted, said:
And He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.
[Al-Nisa: 48], meaning that sins less than shirk, such as zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), undutifulness to parents, intoxicants, and the like, are under the will of Allah. If Allah wills, He forgives their owner on the Day of Resurrection by his other righteous deeds and his other good deeds, as a favor from Allah, out of His existence and generosity.
And if He wills, He punishes him according to the magnitude of the sins he died upon, such as undutifulness to his parents or one of them, drinking an intoxicant, committing zina, backbiting, talebearing, or anything else. Then He, the Exalted, said:
And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
[Al-Nisa: 48]. And in the last verse in Surat al-Nisa:
has certainly gone far astray.
[Al-Nisa: 116]. So the mushrik is astray in a far-reaching way, and he has fabricated a great sin against Allah when he thought that Allah permits this thing and is pleased with it. So he worshipped rivals and idols besides Allah, thinking that this is pleasing to Allah. This is false, and he has fabricated a great sin against Allah with this bad thought.
The summary is that whoever dies upon shirk is not forgiven, and Paradise is forbidden to him, whether Arab or non-Arab, and whether jinn or human. And whoever dies upon sins less than shirk, he is under the will of Allah, contrary to the Mu'tazilah and the Khawarij, and whoever follows their madhab (school of jurisprudence) from among the other innovators. For the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah, and whoever follows their madhab, hold that the sinner is eternal in the Fire, and that he is not forgiven if he dies upon zina; they consider him eternal in the Fire. Or if he drinks intoxicants, they consider him eternal in the Fire. This is false; rather, he is under the will of Allah. If Allah wills, He forgives him, erases his bad deeds, and admits him into Paradise by his tawhid (the oneness of Allah), his Islam, and his other righteous deeds.
And if He wills, He torments him according to the magnitude of his sins. He is tormented in the Fire as long as Allah wills, then he comes out of the Fire. According to the people of the Sunnah and the community, who are the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and their followers with excellence, he is tormented as long as Allah wills. Its duration may be long or short according to his bad deeds, then he comes out of the Fire. He is not eternal in the Fire. No one is eternal in the Fire except the mushrikin (those who associate partners with Allah), except the disbelievers.
As for the sinner who is a monotheist and a Muslim, he is not eternal in the Fire if he enters it. He is tormented according to the magnitude of the sins he died upon without repenting, then Allah takes him out of the Fire into Paradise. This is according to the people of truth, the people of the Sunnah and the community, by the consensus of the people of the Sunnah and the community, contrary to the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah, and whoever follows their methodology from the Ibadis.
The point is that this statement is false, and that the sinner who is a Muslim and a monotheist is under the will of Allah. He is not a disbeliever, and he is not eternal in the Fire. The Khawarij say: If he commits zina, he is a disbeliever; if he steals, he is a disbeliever; if he drinks intoxicants, he is a disbeliever. This is false. He is a sinner and not a disbeliever, but his faith is weak.
For this reason, it came in the hadith that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When (a person) an adulterer commits illegal sexual intercourse then he is not a believer at the time he is doing itلا يزني الزاني حين يزني وهو مؤمن
Sahih al-Bukhari 6782
meaning: complete faith.
and no one who steals is a believer as long as he commits theft, and no one who drinks wine is a believer as long as he drinks itولا يسرق حين يسرق وهو مؤمن، ولا يشرب الخمر حين يشربها وهو مؤمن
Sahih Muslim 57f
meaning: complete faith. He has the foundation of faith, but he is a sinner; his faith is weak. For this reason, it was negated from him, meaning his completeness was negated from him. The evidence is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not rule that the one who commits zina is an apostate, nor the thief. Rather, the explicit Qur'anic text came that the one who commits zina is flogged one hundred lashes, meaning if he is a virgin, and the woman who commits zina is the same. And if the one who commits zina is a married person, he is stoned, as the Sunnah has been authenticated with this, and a Qur'an was revealed regarding this whose wording was abrogated, but its ruling remained. So it is flogging as a hadd (fixed punishment), and stoning as a hadd. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for them when they were stoned.
And the thief has his hand cut off, and he is not a disbeliever. If he were a disbeliever, he would be killed, by the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever changes his religion, execute him.
Sunan Ibn Majah 2535Sahih (Darussalam)
. So if the thief were a disbeliever, he would be killed, and his hand would not be cut off.
Similarly, the drinker of intoxicants, if he were a disbeliever, would be killed. But he is flogged forty lashes. Then 'Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) and the Companions saw that it should be eighty, so he is flogged eighty lashes. So the statement of the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah is what has invalidated the falsehood.
So he is not a disbeliever in the original state if he is a monotheist who worships Allah alone, and he does not have any of the nullifiers of Islam. And he is not eternal in the Fire if he dies upon his sin while being a monotheist and a Muslim. But if Allah does not pardon him, he is punished according to the magnitude of his sin, according to the wisdom and will of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) .
Then Allah takes him out of the Fire after purification and refinement into Paradise. And no one is eternal in the Fire except the disbelievers. No one is eternal in the Fire except the disbelievers whom the Shari'ah has ruled to be disbelievers and to have exited Islam, or those who apostatized after their Islam—they apostatized from Islam and became disbelievers. These are eternal in the Fire by the consensus of the Muslims, as He, the Exalted, said regarding them and their like:
And they are never to emerge from the Fire.
[Al-Baqarah: 167]. And He, the Exalted, said regarding them:
They will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment.
[Al-Ma'idah: 37]. He said regarding them:
Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.
[Al-Baqarah: 167].
This is the truth, and this is a great and important issue. It is obligatory for whoever has some difficulty with it to pay attention to this station, and to know the reality of the madhab of the people of the Sunnah and the community, and to beware of the statement of the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah, and whoever follows their methodology from the people of falsehood who say: The sinner is a disbeliever, like the one who commits zina and the like. Or they say: He is eternal in the Fire. All of this is false.
So the sinner who is a Muslim and a monotheist is not a disbeliever, and he is not eternal in the Fire. But if he enters it, he is tormented according to the magnitude of his crime, then he comes out of it into Paradise. As the hadiths have been mass-transmitted regarding this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people of the Sunnah and the community have agreed upon it. And it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the two Sahihs and others: that he intercedes for the sinners with several intercessions. Allah takes out of the Fire many people who have been charred, who have been burned. Allah takes them out by his intercession (peace and blessings be upon him). And Allah also takes out of the Fire by the intercession of the angels, the other prophets, the messengers, the believers, and the foremost. Allah takes out a great multitude from the Fire by intercession, and no monotheist remains in the Fire.
And after the intercessions, He, the Exalted and Majestic is He, says:
The prophets interceded, and the angels interceded, and the believers interceded, and nothing remained but the mercy of the Most Merciful of the mercifulشفعت الأنبياء، وشفعت الملائكة، وشفع المؤمنون، ولم يبق إلا رحمة أرحم الراحمين
. So Allah takes out of the Fire people without the intercession of anyone. He takes them out of the Fire, the Exalted, because they used to say: La ilaha illa Allah (There is no deity but Allah). They were monotheists and Muslims. They entered the Fire by their sins. So when they were punished according to the magnitude of their sins, Allah took them out of the Fire by their tawhid, their Islam, and their safety from shirk. This is the statement of the people of truth from the people of the Sunnah and the community, who are the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and their followers with excellence (may Allah be pleased with them) and He is pleased with them, and He made us among their followers with excellence.
So it is obligatory upon every believer and every student of knowledge to pay attention to this station, so that people may see clearly, and so that the falsehood of the statement of the innovators from the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah in this matter is clarified to them, and whoever follows their false path. We ask Allah for guidance for all of us.
