The Ruling on Excessive Laughter

Question:
Our brother asks and says: If a servant commits to the commands of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) , and to the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), what should he do? And is it permissible for him to laugh at all times? Knowing that he lives with a group who laugh a lot and speak in ways that are not befitting. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
If a believer commits to everything that Allah and His Messenger have commanded, that is the perfection of faith, and this is from the success of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). So if he commits to obeying Allah and His Messenger in everything that Allah and His Messenger have commanded, and commits to leaving what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and strives against his self, and repents to Allah for his past sins; then this is the true believer, and he is the true Muslim.
So he must strive in that, and adhere to repentance and uprightness, and ask his Lord for success and assistance, and beware of sitting with those who drag him to what Allah has forbidden. He should be eager to keep the company of the good.
There is no harm in laughing when there is a need, or in smiling. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the master of the children of Adam, and the master of the believers and the best of them; he used to laugh when there were causes, and smile when there were causes. He would converse with his Companions about good things, and joke with them, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He would smile at many times, ask them about their conditions, initiate the greeting of peace to them, and return their greetings. He would ask them about some matters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance to point out the evil and error in them, and the wonders in them.
So you should be of good character with your brothers, of good disposition. There is no harm for you in laughing when there are causes, or in smiling. And there is no harm in conversing with them about what Allah has made permissible, or what Allah has prescribed.
And with your family, improve your character with your family. Speak with them in good words, and about things that concern the home, or the chit-chat that concerns the family, in what is not forbidden from the permissible things, and things that comfort them and contain no disobedience.
Do not be gloomy, harsh, or of bad character. No, this is not from Islam, this is not from the religion. It is from the religion to be of good character, pleasant in demeanor, good in meeting, good in speech, and good in company. This is how the believing man and woman should be. Yes.
