Question:
Our brother asks and says: What are the books of the Sunnah that you consider suitable and recommend we acquire?
Answer:
The books of the Sunnah are numerous, praise be to Allah. Among them are the Six Books, the two Sahihs, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah, along with the Muwatta of Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) and the Musnad of Ahmad. These are the well-known books of hadith, and there are other well-known books as well.
Among the books of the Sunnah are those authored by renowned scholars, such as what al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) authored, namely Kitab al-Umm by al-Shafi'i, and the Muwatta by Malik (may Allah have mercy on him). There are also those authored by jurists thereafter regarding the rulings of the pure Shari'ah. Among the best authored in this regard are the works of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him), for they are beneficial books that attend to evidence and prefer the stronger position in matters of scholarly disagreement; thus, they are great books.
Likewise, the books of the Imams of the Da'wah who were active in calling to Islam and spreading it in the land of the Peninsula in the twelfth century, in the second half of the twelfth century and thereafter, namely Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on him), his descendants, his sons, and his supporters from the callers to the Sunnah; for their books are beneficial and great, such as al-Durar al-Saniyyah fi al-Fatawa al-Najdiyyah, and such as Fath al-Majid Sharh Kitab al-Tawhid, and such as Kitab al-Tawhid, Kashf al-Shubuhat, and such as Adab al-Mashy ila al-Salah. And likewise in 'aqidah: al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, and al-Tadmiriyyah by him as well, and al-Humayriyyah. All of these are great and beneficial books. Yes.
